April 19, 2005 | General, Tennis, Track and Field
BOULDER-- Sophomore tennis standout Martina Sedivec earned University of Colorado Athlete of the Week honors Tuesday after she won a pair of No. 5 singles matches and helped teammate Lynzee Kever at No. 2 doubles to another pair of wins in Colorado's 2-0 week over Kansas and Kansas State.
The Montreal, Quebec, Canada (Royal West Academy) native led the No. 59 nationally ranked Buffaloes to a 5-2 win over the Jayhawks, and a 4-3 victory over the Wildcats. Sedivec leads CU in dual match victories with 12, and ranks second overall for the year with 16. Sedivec has won four of her last five matches, including a 5-3 mark against the conference at the No. 5 slot.
Others nominated for this week's award were Renee Metivier (women's track and field), Bret Schoolmeester (men's track and field), and Marko Bundalo (men's tennis).
Women's Track and Field: Renee Metivier Senior, Highland Village, Texas
The senior, in a field that ran the top four times in the world this season on Friday, ran to her second NCAA Midwest Regional qualifying mark in the steeplechase at the Mt. SAC Relays. Metivier's 10:13.80 was good for seventh place, the top time by any collegian in the race, the best in the league so far this season, and second in the nation. It also matches the CU school record set in this meet three years ago by Lesley Higgins.
Men's Track and Field: Bret Schoolmeester, Junior, Sedalia, Colo.
In one of the most dramatic races of the meet, the junior was one step shy of winning the men's 10,000-m invitational race at the Mt. SAC Relays, he finished second in 28 minutes, 33.31 minutes, an NCAA automatic qualifying mark, USA Track and Field Championships A Standard, league leading time and a personal best. His time was just seven one-hundredths of a second behind that of Arizona's Robert Cheseret (28:33.24) in Friday's final event. Schoolmeester ran with the lead pack through the entire 10k race and with a lap to go, Arizona's Robert Cheseret and Jason Hubbard (unattached) took a 100-m lead. Schoolmeester answered back by running the last 200-m in 27 seconds and was one step ahead of Cheseret before being caught at the line.
Men's Tennis: Marko Bundalo, Junior, Pancevo, Serbia and Montenegro
The junior won a pair of singles matches at No. 2 during the CU men's tennis 0-2 week. Bundalo upset the nation's No. 23rd ranked team from Texas A&M, defeating Jerry Makowski, 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8) in Friday's 5-2 loss at the No. 13 Aggies. On Sunday, Bundalo returned to the winners' circle defeating TCU's Jacob Martin, 6-4, 7-5. The Buffaloes fell to the No. 49 Horned Frogs, 6-1. Bundalo is second on the team with 18 victories.
