Buffs Fall In Regular Season Finale, 4-3

April 24, 2005 | Tennis

BOULDER ? The University of Colorado women's tennis team couldn't escape the frigid weather and the nation's No. 35 ranked team of Nebraska, falling in their regular season finale, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the South Campus Tennis Courts. The Buffaloes end the conference season with a 5-6 record and 10-11 overall, while the Cornhuskers won their seventh in a row and improve to 18-2 and 9-2 in the Big 12.

With inclement weather in question on Sunday, the match was moved to 9:30 in the morning rather than the scheduled 1 p.m. start.

After the two teams spilt the singles portion 3-3 and the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles slots, Nebraska avoided the upset and hung on for a narrow 9-7 winner at No. 2 doubles to clinch the match.

In the morning stages of the singles matches, CU received wins from Kendra Strandemo (No. 2), Veera Nurmi (No. 5), and Gleisy Torres Torres (No.6).

Strandemo became just the 12th women at Colorado to win 70 career singles matches taking a tough straight set winner over Imke Reimers, 7-5, 7-6(3). The four-year standout from San Diego also won her 16th singles match and later teamed with Jessica Vanderdys at No. 1 doubles for an 8-1 win.

Nurmi won her team-best 18th singles win at No. 5 in three sets, while Torres Torres won her 17th of the season in straight sets at No. 6.

Strandemo/Vanderdys, ranked No. 43rd nationally out of 60 doubles teams by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) won their 13th match of the year.

Colorado travels to the Big 12 Conference Tournament hosted by the University of Texas, April 28-May 1. As of today it is not known who the Buffs will play in the first round.
