Slattery CU/Big 12 Athlete of the Week

April 26, 2005 | General, Track and Field

BOULDER-- Senior distance runner Sara Slattery was named both CU and Big 12 Conference Athlete of the Week for the period ending April 24.

In her first race on the track this academic year, Sara Slattery returned to form by winning the women's seeded 5,000-m run at the Oregon Invitational in Eugene, Ore. Saturday night.  Her time of 16 minutes 4.91 seconds was nearly seven seconds ahead of Arizona State's Amy Hastings (16:11.28) and is an NCAA regional qualifier.  It is also the second fastest time in the country this season and leads the Big 12 and NCAA Midwest Region.

Others nominated for this week's award were Bernard Jackson (Football), George Pincock (men's track and field), Allison Rella (women's golf), Kendra Strandemo (women's tennis), and Marko Bundalo (men's tennis).

Football: Bernard Jackson, Sophomore, Corona, Calif.

The sophomore quarterback dazzled 3,000 plus fans in this past weekend's spring game, by going 7-of-11 passing for 70 yards and one touchdown, the Buffs lone score via the air. In addition Jackson continued to impress by rushing six times for 41 yards, setting up Colorado's only other offensive score for the day.

Men's Tack and Field: George Pincock, Sophomotr, Carson City, Nev.

The sophomore took runner-up finishes as the anchor leg of the CU's 400-m relay team, as the lead leg of the mile relay, in the prelims of the 400-m dash and fourth in the finals at the Michael Johnson Classic in Waco, Texas this past Saturday. In the 400-m, Pincock led a 2-7-8 Buff showing in the 400-m prelims before he finished fourth in the finals in 48.06.

Women's Golf: Allison Rella, Senior, Cranbrook, B.C. Canada

With a career low 2-under 70 in the first round of this year's Big 12 Championship, the senior became the first Colorado golfer in league history to tie or lead the championship after the first day of competition as the senior sat atop the 60-player leader board Friday at the University of Texas Golf Club. She would go on to shoot a second round 82 and third round 81. Her 54-hole total 233 gave her a career best conference tournament 19th place finish. Likely the last tournament of her career, she will graduate with a 78.25 strokes per average, which is third all-time at CU.

Women's Tennis: Kendra Strandemo, Senior, San Diego, Calif.

The senior recorded three wins over the weekend that included one doubles win and her 69th and 70th career singles victories. The four-year standout is the 12th CU woman to tally that many singles victories in a career. Strandemo won both her matches at No. 2 helping the Buffaloes defeat No. 64 Oklahoma (4-3) and narrowly upsetting No. 35 Nebraska by the same score. In doubles, she teamed with Jessica Vanderdys at No. 1 for a 1-1 record defeating the Cornhuskers No. 1 doubles team, 8-1. Strandemo and Vanderdys are the No. 43rd doubles team in the nation. The CU women (10-11, 5-6) seeded No. 6 in the Big 12 Tournament will play No. 11 Kansas on Thursday at the University of Texas.

Men's Tennis: Marko Bundalo, Junior, Pancevo, Serbia & Montenegro

The junior recorded two singles wins at the No. 2 slot helping Colorado to a 1-1 weekend in its season finale at home. Bundalo won the decisive singles point in the Buffaloes 4-3 upset win over No. 47 Oklahoma, 4-3, and secured the lone CU point in the Buffs 6-1 loss to No. 10 Texas Tech.  The Serbia and Montenegro native entered the week as the No. 123rd Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles player, his first national ranking of his three-year career. Bundalo also upset Texas Tech's No. 40th ranked played in straight sets (6-2, 6-3). Heading into the Big 12 Tournament this weekend, Bundalo leads the team in victories with 20 and has won five of his last six matches with a pair over nationally ranked opponents. CU (9-14, 2-5) seeded No. 7 at this weekend's Big 12 tournament will play No. 2 seed Texas A&M on Friday.
