Buffs Open Exhibition Season with Pair of Wins

September 03, 2005 | Men's Basketball

VANCOUVER, British Columbia ? The University of Colorado men's basketball team opened the 2005-06 exhibition season with a pair of victories Saturday defeating the University of British Columbia, 90-74, then coming back later in the evening to rout the Burnaby Mountain All-Stars, 81-53 in the first of two days against schools from the Vancouver area.

The Buffaloes are on a four-day trip through Vancouver from Sept. 2-5 and close out their three-game tour on Sunday, Sept. 4 with a 1 p.m. (MST) tip against Trinity Western University. Traditionally the college basketball season does not begin until October 15, however, with its trip north of the border, the NCAA allows a college every four years to travel abroad and play against colleges from other countries.

In the first game on Saturday, the Buffs showed signs of last year's slow start trailing early through the first 4:55 of the game, 5-2 on 1-for-13 shooting. The deficit would not last and CU took the lead for good at 13:44 by a two-point basketball by junior guard Marcus Hall. The Buffs took control of the game from there running out to a pair of nine-point leads over the next 9:09 and 8:36 led by freshman walk-on Chase Perkowski, who not only scored two points on a jumper, but feeding Martane Freeman and Richard Roby on back-to-back 3-pointers for a 22-13 advantage.

From there the route was on as the Buffs exploded out to a 40-21 lead with 2:50 remaining in the half and ended the first stanza for a 48-26 leads. Chris Copeland scored a team-high 16 points leading four other players in double figures . Jayson Obazuaye added 15 points, in addition to Roby netting 14 points, Andy Osborn adding 13, and junior-transfer Dominique Coleman chipping-in 10. The CU defense also shined with 16 blocked shots led by Obazuaye, who turned away four blocks of his own.

Coach Patton:

Impressions of two games on Saturday

“I think we played better than I expected; we played hard and that's the thing I'm most pleased with.  Certainly there are things we need to improve on; we gave up 20 offensive rebounds earlier today and we still haven't made our free throws. I can not say anything about our effort, our effort has been solid both games.”

Standout player in your mind today:

Jayson Obazuaye ... Jayson is playing with a mission; he's been solid and he's doing all the little things and I think his teammates are feeding off his energy. He's coming off the bench, but I kind of like that. He's bringing something to the court that we definitely need and that's a high level of energy."
