Soccer Ties Wyoming 1-1

September 04, 2005 | Soccer

DENVER - Despite leading for well over half the contest, the University of Colorado women's soccer team could not hold on to win the championship game of the 2005 Denver Soccer Classic, tying the University of Wyoming by a score of 1-1.

"This game shows that we are in no way prepared for what lies ahead of us," said CU head coach Bill Hempen.  "Unfortunately we have no senior leadership, and we're having to look to the younger kids for that."

Colorado (1-1-2) scored the first goal of the game on a rocket by senior Tricia Regan.  After several CU scoring opportunities, senior Fran Munnelly fired a blistering shot from the left side of the goal, which Wyoming goalkeeper Jamie Scarcliff could not hang on to.  The ball was deflected off Scarcliff's hands 10 yards out of the goalmouth, and rolled to Regan, who fired a one touch rocket into the back of the net at the 42:49 mark of the first half.

CU edged Wyoming (2-0-1) in the shot column in the first half, with nine shots to UW's five.  The first half was a very physical one, with Wyoming getting whistled for 12 fouls to Colorado's one.

The clocked ticked down to the last seconds of the second half when Wyoming freshman Amanda Lathrop dumped the ball in over the top to classmate Tamika Wilson.  Wilson was able to get behind the CU defense and hit a hard shot to Keller's right, which ricocheted off the inside of the post and into the CU net with just nine seconds left in the game.  That sent the game into extra time.

Overtime featured four Wyoming shots and two for Colorado, with two of Wyoming's coming on goal and needing a save from Keller.  After 20 minutes of overtime, the score was final at 1-1.

At this point, effort is much more important than talent and that's how we're going to start thinking about how we play."  "We're going to have to change our outlook from talent to effort.

CU and Wyoming had to endure an unofficial shootout to determine the winner of the tournament championship. Wyoming won that shootout, the second for Colorado in as many games, 5-4.

Colorado is on the road again next weekend, heading to California for the UCLA Women's Cup.  CU will face UCLA on Friday at 9 p.m. MDT, then face USC on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. MDT.
