BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's tennis team rallied during the singles portion of the match winning four of six slots to upset No. 52 Denver, 4-3, late Friday night at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House. With the win, the Buffaloes improve to 2-0 on the young season, while Pioneers dropped their season opener.
“Tonight was a great team effort,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “After we lost the doubles point, we saw the heart of this team. All six singles played well. Denver is a good team and they're going to have a very good season.”
After Denver (0-1) took the early advantage winning two of three doubles points for a 1-0 lead, the Buffaloes stormed back quickly behind the strength of its nationally ranked singles players, freshman Monica Milewski and senior Jessica Vanderdys.
Milewski, ranked No. 56 and playing No. 1 singles for the first time in her collegiate career, defeated senior Suzana Maksovic 6-3, 6-2 to even the match at one.
A short time later, Vanderdys, ranked No. 39 nationally made the team score 2-1 CU also winning her match in straight sets over junior Rachel Sackmaster 6-2, 6-0.
Denver evened the match at two by taking the No. 3 slot, then saw CU freshman Ewa Losinski rally from a set down at No. 4 to defeat junior Marisa Mechem 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. The Buffs clinched the match thereafter claiming the fourth point by another one if its outstanding freshmen as Franziska Jendrian won her No. 6 match, 6-2, 6-1 over freshman Lorinda Boothman.
The CU victory ended a two-match losing streak to their in-state rivals. The Buffaloes have won four of its last six against DU and hold a commanding 26-4 lead in overall series.
Colorado continues their home stand next week taking on No. 21 BYU (Jan. 27) and No. 37 Alabama (Jan. 29). Both matches are at the Harvest House with the Lady Cougars match beginning at 5 p.m., while the Crimson Tide begins at 9 a.m.
