BOULDER-- Junior men's tennis player Peter Bjork and freshman women's tennis player Fanziska Jendrian were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week, for the week of Jan 15.

Bjork, a Huddinge, Sweden (Akademi Bastad) native, won two singles matches and collaborated on a doubles win with teammate Chad Tsuda helping the Colorado men's tennis team win the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region last Saturday at Boise State. The team win was CU's first-ever regional win and qualified the Buffaloes for the 16-team ITA National Indoors in Seattle, Wash., next month. Bjork rallied and defeated BYU's Chip Hand in three sets (4-6, 6-1, 7-6) at No. 2 singles powering CU to the upset over the No. 28 Cougars, 4-2. Later in the day, Bjork defeated Utah's Tomasz Grzyb in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) as the No. 57 Buffaloes swept the No. 72 Utes. Bjork and Tsuda helped CU win the doubles point at No. 2 defeating the Utes, 8-3. The Buffaloes (2-0), ranked No. 57 nationally, entered the regional weekend as the No. 3 seed.

Jendrian, a Rodleben, Germany (Sportsgymnasium Magdeburg) native, won a pair of matches at No. 6 singles, including the clinching match over DU's Lorinda Boothman 6-2, 6-1. The CU women's team opened the season with a pair of victories over Air Force, 7-0 and an upset winner over No. 52 Denver, 4-3.  The win helped the No. 55 nationally ranked Buffaloes break a two-match losing streak against their in-state rivals. Earlier in the week, Jendrian defeated Meghan Kister, 6-1, 6-0 of Air Force, helping the Buffaloes remain perfect over the Falcons in the overall series 8-0. With these two wins, Jendrian has now won seven singles matches in the 2005-06 season.
