Sedivec, Torres Torres Advance To Singles Main Draw

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah ? University of Colorado sophomore Gleisy Torres Torres and senior Martina Sedivec each won twice to advance to the singles main draw at the 2006 Wilson/ITA Central Region Women's Tennis Championships on Wednesday. The five-day regional is hosted by the University of Utah from Oct. 18 through Sunday, Oct. 22 at the Eccles Tennis Center.

The tournament features over 120 participants from 16 college teams across the region.

With her two victories, Torres Torres remained unbeaten this fall season at 6-0 as she defeated Estelle Guillamond (New Mexico State) 6-1, 6-3 and Michelle Brown (Wyoming) 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 64 and Round of 32, respectively.

Sedivec won her third and fourth matches this season defeating Andrea Maughan (Utah) 7-5, 6-0 and Lauren Schrub (Idaho) 6-0, 6-3.

Victoria Almagno went 1-1 on the day defeating Amy Senko (Wyoming) 6-4, 6-3, then falling in the Round of 32.

Overall, CU went 5-1 on the day in singles play.

Sedivec and Torres Torres join fellow teammates Franziska Jendrian, Monica Milewski and Veera Nurmi in the Round of 32 main draw played on Thursday.

A trio of CU doubles teams also get underway Thursday.

Tournament play opens with the singles qualifying rounds on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday features one round of main draw singles and two rounds of doubles, and consolation rounds starting at 8:30 a.m. The quarterfinals and semifinals of all draws will be played Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m. The consolation and championship finals of both singles and doubles takes place Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
