Pifer and Zikova Race to CU Athletes of the Week Honors
February 15, 2006 | General, Track and Field, Skiing
BOULDER-- Junior men's track and field distance runner Stephone Pifer and sophomore skier Lucie Zikova were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of Feb. 7-Feb. 13. This is Pifer's first CU Athlete of the Week honor and Zikova's second in less than a month.
Pifer, an Edwardsville, Illinois (Highland Park) native, established the first mark under four minutes in the mile for Colorado at the Husky Classic, hosted by the University of Washington. Pifer completed the mile in 3:59.55, more than two seconds faster than the old school record, which was previously 4:01.94, set by Steve Slattery in 2001. Pifer finished fifth and provisionally qualified for the national championships with the time.
Zikova, a Prague, Czech Republic (Gymnazium Ustavni 400) native, set a school record for the most individual victories by an alpine woman for a single season; she swept the giant slalom and slalom race at the Western State Invitational, helping the Buffs to their second straight victory. They were her fourth and fifth wins of the year, besting the old record of four shared by Linda Wikstrom (1999) and Caroline Gedde-Dahl (1998). It marked the second time this season she won both races at one meet, having also done so at Montana State; in the three races she did not win, she has finished as the runner-up.
Others nominated for this week's award were: Richard Roby (men's basketball), Kit Richmond (men's skiing), Edward McGlasson (golf), Franziska Jendrian (women's tennis), Christine Bolf (women's track and field) and Caley Dow (women's basketball).
Men's Basketball: Richard Roby, Sophomore, San Bernardino, Calif.
Roby recorded his second double-double of the season (fourth career) with a team-high 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, the most by a Colorado guard since Donnie Boyce in 1995, helping Colorado defeat Texas Tech, 66-64. Roby also scored a game-high 22 points in the Buffaloes' 61-58 loss at Texas A&M. The 6-6 guard averaged 19.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in two games. Roby also made 10-of-11 shots from the free throw line against the Red Raiders with three assists, three blocked shots and two steals.
Men's Skiing: Kit Richmond, Sophomore, Red Deer, Alberta
Richmond helped CU to its second straight win with a victory and runner-up finish in Nordic competition at the Western State Invitational. He won his first collegiate race in claiming the men's 10-kilometer classical race; pulling away at the end for a three-plus second win in a 29:25.9 time. He was the runner-up the previous day in the 5k freestyle race, at the time matching his collegiate best finish.
Men's Golf: Edward McGlasson, Senior, Orange, Calif.
McGlasson tied for 5th (66-71-71--208), led CU to 13th place finish in 21-team field at the Hawaii-Hilo Invitational. He shot a 31 on his opening nine holes, tied for the third best 9-hole score in school history. His 208 total for 54 holes also tied the fifth best performance on a par-72 course in CU history.
Women's Tennis: Franziska Jendrian, Freshman, Rodleben, Germany
Jendrian was the lone Colorado player who claimed a point rallying at the No. 5 singles slot 5-7, 6-4, 1-0(5) in the Buffaloes 6-1 loss to No. 3 Texas. Jendrian won the third set in a super tie-breaker by a 10-5 margin for her fifth win of the spring season in six attempts. CU is ranked No. 42 nationally and 5-2 on the season.
Women's Track and Field: Christine Bolf, Senior, Los Angeles, Calif.
Bolf recorded a personal record in the 5k at the Husky Classic last Saturday, finishing third in the event in 15:46.56, behind Amy Hastings of Arizona State and former Buff Renee Metivier. Her time was good for an automatic national championships qualifier in her first 5k race of the indoor season. The time was the second best in school history, just a little over seven seconds off of Sara (Gorton) Slattery's record of 15:39.25.
Women's Basketball: Caley Dow, Freshman, Littleton, Colo.
Dow recorded her second double-double in three games, but Kansas State held on for a 67-62 win. Dow, a perfect 6-of-6 from the field in the game, finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds making her total 30 rebounds over the last three games. She had 11 points and 11 rebounds in the win over Kansas on Feb. 1, and seven points-all in the second half- and five rebounds in a losing effort against Texas Tech.
