McGlasson and Vanderdys Named CU Athletes of the Week
February 22, 2006 | General, Men's Golf, Tennis
BOULDER - Senior men's golf stand out Edward McGlasson and senior tennis player Jessica Vanderdys were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of February 14-20. This is both McGlasson and Vanderdys's second CU Athlete of the Week honor of the year.
McGlasson, an Orange, Calif. (Elmodena) native, tied for fifth in the Hawai'i-Hilo Intercollegiate, helping CU to tie for 13th overall in the 21-team field that featured 11 top-50 teams. He turned in a 66-71-71--208 scorecard on the 6,777-yard, par-71 Waikoloa Village Golf Course (5-under par), with his first round 66 his second best round as a collegian.
Vanderdys, a Centreville, Va. (Centreville) native, won a pair of singles matches and one doubles match helping the No. 41 ranked Colorado women's tennis team to a 1-1 split in their trip to the state of Oregon. The Buffaloes (6-3) narrowly lost to No. 23 Oregon, 4-3, and then handily defeated Portland, 7-0. Vanderdys picked up her 66th and 67th career singles wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles slots, respectively. Vanderdys, ranked No. 39 nationally, also paired with teammate Monica Milewski at No. 1 doubles against the Pilots on Sunday for an 8-2 win.
Others nominated for this week's award were: Richard Roby (men's basketball), Marek Dvorak (men's tennis) and Jackie McFarland (women's basketball).
Men's Basketball: Richard Roby, Sophomore, San Bernardino, Calif.
Roby averaged 21.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals in CU's 1-1 week. Roby scored a game-high 28 points with nine rebounds in the Buffs' win over then No. 19 Oklahoma, 84-75. Roby was also a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line against the Sooners. In CU's second game of the week, Roby scored 14 points in the loss at Kansas State, 72-60. The Buffaloes are in fourth place in the Big 12 Conference with a 17-6 record overall and 7-5 in conference play.
Men's Tennis: Marek Dvorak, Junior, Prague, Czech Republic
Dvorak was the lone Colorado men's player to earn a point over the weekend, as CU was one of 16 teams competing at the USTA/ITA National Men's Tennis Championships at the University of Washington. Dvorak defeated Martel Campbell from LSU, 7-6(3), 6-4 at the No. 6 position for this third win of the spring in five attempts. Dvorak is 11-8 for the No. 54 nationally ranked Buffaloes (4-3).
Women's Basketball: Jackie McFarland, Sophomore, Derby, Kan.
McFarland, in a 92-65 victory over Northern Colorado, dropped a game high 29 points. CU hit a season high 67.7 percent from the field in the first half (21-of-31), building a 53-29 lead. The 6-foot-3 forward took advantage of her height advantage down low; UNC's tallest starter was 6-1. McFarland added 13 rebounds and four assists for her 12th double-double of the season. Her 12 double-doubles tie Erin Scholz (1995-96) for the fourth best single-season mark in team history. Later in the week she scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, recording her 13th double-double of the season, which wasn't enough to stop Missouri's balanced attack as the Tigers defeated the Buffaloes 72-57.
