Golfers In Second At Houston All-American
February 27, 2006 | Men's Golf
The No. 50 Buffaloes, the highest ranked team in the tournament, trail only host Houston (No. 58) in the 13-team field in their bid to win a tournament for the first time since the Western Intercollegiate in March 2004. The Cougars own a 10-under team score of 566 through 36 holes, with the Buffaloes in at 3-under 573. Kansas is a distant third at this point, some 17 strokes back at 583.
Senior Edward McGlasson and redshirt freshman Derek Tolan paced the Buffaloes Monday, as both are tied for fourth with 3-under 141 totals. McGlasson put a 2-under 70 in the books the first time around the 7,220-yard, par-72 Tradition Course at Cypresswood Golf Club course, and then followed with a 1-under 71 in the afternoon. Tolan did the same, except in reverse in posting a 71 first.
McGlasson and Tolan are within range for medalist honors, as Memphis' Kevin Fortin-Simard owns the individual lead at 8-under 136. Daniel Willett (Jacksonville State, 137) and Zach Mowbray (Houston, 139), stand between the lead and the CU pair along with Kansas senior Gary Woodland.
Senior Kenny Coakley is eighth after a pair of 1-under 71s, as his 142 still has him in the hunt for top honors as well as he matched his fall count for subpar rounds in one day. Sophomore Patrick Grady posted his best two rounds of the season in recording a 74-75?149 scorecard, with freshman Diego Munoz in at 80-77?159, as the Mexico City native, who has now lived all of two months in the states, continues to assimilate. He did have it 2-under early in the second round before ending at 5-over.
"I was pleased with the consistency of the play today," interim head coach Brad Neher said. "Things we have been working on we are implementing well in tournament action, and what I saw in Hawaii is continuing to move the team forward and improve.
"Edward is playing rock solid, and he's going to bust out any time now with a low, low round, we all feel it, and Derek is back to where he was in the fall, and is capable of that as well," Neher noted. "It was great to see Kenny put together two good rounds back-to-back, and Patrick is improving as well; he had it under par in both rounds but didn't close well, but he'll learn. Diego, well, sometimes freshmen play like Tiger Woods, sometimes they play like freshmen. He'll be fine, he's just putting too much pressure on himself."
"We're poised to play well Tuesday, and we're hungry for a win," Neher said. "What's neat about this team is that we talked about our position in the field (being the highest ranked team here). They know what they are capable of, they have realistic expectations and the seniors keep the younger kids in check and are responsible for a great attitude on this team."
The final round will be played Tuesday morning, and then the Buffs turn around quickly and will participate in the Louisiana Classics early next week.
