February 28, 2006 | Skiing
INDIANAPOLIS - The NCAA Men's and Women's Skiing Committee announced today the 74 men and 74 women selected to participate in the 2006 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Skiing Championships, to be held March 8-11 at Howelsen Hill and Mt. Werner in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The championships will be hosted by the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Participants are selected on a regional basis from two designated regions for Alpine skiing (East and West Regions), and three designated regions for Nordic skiing (Central, East and West Regions). Bids are awarded to regions using a formula determined by the skiing committee. A maximum of 12 student-athletes (three per gender per discipline) may participate from an institution.
Alpine events will run March 8 and 10. The men's and women's giant slaloms will be held March 8 at Mt. Werner, with the men's and women's slaloms conducted March 10 at Howelsen Hill.
Nordic events will be held March 9 and 11 at Howelsen Hill. The women's five-kilometer and men's 10-kilometer classical cross-country races will be conducted March 9. The men's 20-kilometer and women's 15-kilometer freestyle cross-country races will be held March 11.
Highlights of the skiing championships will be shown on CBS at 1 p.m. Eastern time, Saturday, April 22. CBS Sports Presents Championships of the NCAA will feature highlights of 17 different NCAA championships; each taking place during the winter season.

In the Nordic events of last year's National Collegiate Men's and Women's Skiing Championships, performances by Mandy Kaempf of Alaska Anchorage and Rene Reisshauer of Denver seemed to mimic those of 2004 champions Sigrid Aas of Alaska Fairbanks and Henning Dybendal of Utah. Reminiscent of the performance by Aas, Kaempf swept the women's five-kilometer freestyle and 15-kilometer classical cross-country events, while Reisshauer's sweep of the men's 10-kilometer freestyle and 20-kilometer classical cross-country races lead the Pioneers to their 18th NCAA championship. Reisshauer turned in a very impressive performance in the 20-kilometer classical cross-country race, where he finished 51 seconds ahead of his closest competitor.
Individual winners on the Alpine side included, Megan Hughes of Middlebury in the women's slalom and David Chodounsky of Dartmouth in the men's slalom. Vermont swept both the men's and women's giant slalom with Greg Hardy and Jamie Kingsbury winning their respective events.
