Women's Golf Stays Put at UNLV Invite
March 13, 2006 | Women's Golf
LAS VEGAS-The University of Colorado women's golf team had a better outing in their second round here Tuesday, but remain in 16th at the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational after shooting 307 at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Â
The Buffs sat in a tie for 16th after shooting 313, but collectively posted a score six strokes better and two Buffs posted nine hole scores under par, but it wasn't enough to move up in the standings.
Â
Today's best round belonged to CU's lone senior, Maria Persson-Gulda. After struggling yesterday with a nine-over 81, she rallied today for CU's best individual round of the tournament so far, a three-over 75. The Buffaloes teed off on No. 10 today, and Persson-Gulda, playing first after posting the highest CU score yesterday, had a tough time on her first nine at BCGC, with three bogeys and a double against just one birdie, which put her at a four-over 40 after nine. But the savvy Swede played a stellar back nine for a -1 score of 35, which included two birdies and six pars.
Â
"Maria had a good back nine, she played pretty well," said head coach Anne Kelly. "We had it going early, a few people under par, we just had a little better day overall."
Â
Joining Persson-Gulda today on the improvement curve was junior Hannah Hoch, who put together a plus-four 76, bettering her first round score by a stroke. Hoch opened with back-to-back bogeys, but rallied with six straight holes of par or better before a bogey on 18 shut down her streak. She then bogeyed three holes on the front nine to finish her round at 76.
Â
CU's third-best golfer on the day was again freshman Lindsay Caljouw, who shot a five-over 77, two shots better than her Monday effort. She put together a five-hole rally of pars or better with back-to-back birdies on 12 and 13, but was buffered by four-straight bogeys from hole 16 over to hole 1. Still, it was an improvement from her first round score of 79.
Â
Junior Lindsay Koth opened her second round with a birdie on No. 10 and played five straight holes at par before another birdie at No. 16. A bogey on 17 was the only blemish on her front nine, and she finished the that at -1 for the only other nine hole score under par for CU so far this tournament. Her back nine was unfortunately a different story, as she struggled with two double bogeys and a triple, finally wrapping up with a final score for the round of 79.
Â
CU's top golfer from Monday's round, Lindsay Senger, had a little more trouble today, as a pair of double bogeys on the front nine put her at five over after the first half of her round.  She put together a better back, as she finished that at two over for a final round score of 79.Â
Â
"Hannah had a good day and Senger is close, she's just got to get her putter going," said Kelly. "We need to get a little better than 76 or 75 to start getting on the team leaderboard and we are really getting there. We have had good progress at the fourth and fifth positions. Caljouw is not up to her game yet, but she'll be there soon. Hopefully tomorrow."

The UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational will wrap up on Wednesday morning with the final round. CU golf fans can follow the action at www.golfstat.com.Â
