Tolan, McGlasson Pacing Golfers In Louisiana

March 06, 2006 | Men's Golf

LAFAYETTE, La. - The University of Colorado men's golf team has two players in the hunt for medalist honors but couldn't get its third, fourth or fifth man to get rolling here Monday as the Buffaloes are tied for ninth through two rounds of the 21st Annual Louisiana Classics.

Baylor, ranked No. 11 in the nation, holds a 12-stroke lead entering the final round, as the Bears recorded a 21-under team score for 36 holes of 555.  No. 48 Missouri is in second (567), with No. 47 Houston third (568).   SMU and Southeast Louisiana are tied for fourth at 570, rounding out the top five in the 15-team field that includes seven top 50 teams.

The Buffs, ranked No. 46, are tied with Rice for ninth with 578 totals.  CU was also tied for ninth after the morning round, but was just three strokes out of fourth place.

Redshirt freshman Derek Tolan used his first collegiate round in the 60s en route to tying for fourth place, as the Highlands Ranch product opened with a 3-under 69 in the morning round and followed with a 70 for a 139 total.  Senior Edward McGlasson shot a 1-under 71 the first time around the 7,002-yard, par-72 Oakbourne Country Club course, and matched Tolan with an afternoon 70 to close at 141, tying him for eighth.

The CU duo trail Houston's Ricky Romano (a pair of 68s) and Baylor's Jeremy Alcorn (69, 67), as the pair put 8-under 136 scores into the books.

"They both played extremely solid, very consistent in all aspects of their games," interim head coach Brad Neher said about Tolan and McGlasson.  "If we can get a little run going for Derek or just a few more putts to fall for Ed, they are both on the verge of just busting out.  I just love the consistency of how both are playing under par virtually every round.  Both only had a couple of mistakes that kept them from scoring lower,"

McGlasson and Tolan had 16 birdies and only eight bogeys, with no double bogeys, between them over the course of 72 combined holes on Monday.

It's a far cry from CU's performance here last year, when the Buffaloes finished last in the 15-team field in a rain-shortened event.  McGlasson paced year ago, finishing 56th with a 155 total; he had CU's low score of 74 on the same Oakbourne course, a number bettered six times Monday by this year's group.   This is CU's 16th time playing in the Classics, and Tolan and McGlasson can both topple the previous CU best individual score here, an even-par 216 on two occasions.

Senior Kenny Coakley shot a pair of 1-over 73s to stand tied 41st with a 146 score.   Junior Ryan Anderson and sophomore Patrick Grady both totaled 153 (9-over) through 36 holes, though Grady did pare three strokes off his morning round in recording an afternoon75.

"Kenny is also playing well, we're just waiting for him to find that groove where he can hit on even more cylinders and then he'll be where Ed and Derek are right now," Neher added.  "As far as the team, we know those three guys are going to put up a good number every day, it's just a matter of the fourth and fifth guys putting up better scores and then one of the top three logging a really good number and then we'll be winning golf tournaments.

"The other guys need to finish better, but they're right there," Neher added.  "Patrick didn't close well in the afternoon as he had it under par most of the round.  And Ryan, for someone who hasn't played that much in three years, is on the verge of becoming a quality player for us if he just continues to do what he has been doing."

The final round is scheduled for Tuesday morning, as the players will start on both the first and tenth tees in lieu of a shotgun format, which was utilized Monday.
