Tsuda and Vanderdys Serve as CU Athletes of the Week

BOULDER - Senior men's tennis player Chad Tsuda and senior women's tennis standout Jessica Vanderdys were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of April 11-17. This is Tsuda's first and Vanderdys' third (Oct. 25, Feb. 22) CU Athlete of the Week honor of the year. This marks the second consecutive week Tennis has swept the weekly award and the fourth consecutive time the men's tennis team has won the award; no player has repeated over the four weeks.
Tsuda, a Boulder, Colo. (Fairview) native, closed his final home tennis weekend with two singles and two doubles victories helping the No. 28 CU's men's tennis team upset No. 23 Boise State, 4-3 and defeat No. 63 Denver, 6-1. Tsuda, playing the No. 5 singles slot, won his matches by defeating Boise State's Piote Dilaj, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 and DU's Alioa Nipic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Tsuda also teamed with Jan Zelezny at the No. 2 doubles slot for a pair of victories. Tsuda leads the team in spring victories with 15 and for the year with 22 wins to his credit.
Vanderdys, a Centreville, Va. (Centreville) native, won her 71st career singles match, becoming only the 13th woman in school history to accomplish that feat. Vanderdys' upset victory over the No. 107 ranked player from Kansas, Ksenia Bukina, 7-5, 6-2, was her 20th singles win of the year. It is the second time in her four-year career Vanderdys has won 20 singles matches in a season, duplicating her sophomore year.
Others nominated for this week's award were: Edward McGlasson (men's golf), Pete Janson (men's track and field) and Jenny Barringer (women's track and field).
Men's Golf: Edward McGlasson, Senior, Orange, Calif.
McGlasson tied for 21st in the Texas A&M Aggie Invitational, with a 75-74-77--226 scorecard. That snapped a school-record six-straight top 10 finishes recorded by McGlasson, who is ranked No. 18 in the nation. Colorado finished 10th out of 12 teams in the tournament.
Men's Track and Field: Pete Janson, Junior, Dallas, Texas
Janson recorded a regionally qualifying time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase this past weekend at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. He completed the race in a season-best time of 8:53.79, an improvement of 30 seconds from the last time he ran the race. His time ranks 11th nationally, third in the Midwest region and second in the Big 12 Conference.
Women's Track and Field: Jenny Barringer, Freshman, Oviedo, Fla.
Barringer notched a regional qualifying time of 16:15.23 in the 5k at the Mt. SAC Relays. The time ranks 11th nationally, second in the Midwest region and first in the Big 12 Conference and is a personal best for Barringer.
