No. 53 Women's Tennis Falls At No. 5 Baylor

April 22, 2006 | Tennis

WACO, Texas ? No. 53 University of Colorado claimed an upset at No. 1 doubles, but it was the only chink in the armor of No. 5 Baylor University as the Bears wrapped up an undefeated Big 12 Conference regular season with a 7-0 win over the Buffaloes Saturday afternoon at the Baylor Tennis Center in Waco.

Colorado completes the regular season at 10-9 and in ninth place in the Big 12 at 4-7. Baylor, which had already wrapped up the Big 12 regular season crown, finishes the league season at 11-0, 22-3 overall.

Colorado's No. 1 doubles team of senior Jessica Vanderdys and sophomore Gleisy Torres Torres provided the Buffs bright spot of the afternoon by upsetting Baylor's No. 43 ranked duo of Zuzana Cerna and Klara Zrustova, 8-5. The win allowed Vanderdys and Torres Torres to improve to 7-3 as doubles partners, 6-3 in the No. 1 slot.

The Bears still claimed the doubles point as Daniela Covello and Iva Mihaylova defeated Monica Milewski and Franziska Jendrian at No. 2 doubles and Zuzana Zemenova and Zuzana Krchnakova defeated Ewa Losinski and Martina Sedivec at No. 3 doubles by identical 8-4 scores.

Featuring four ranked singles players Saturday, three of which are in the top 100, Baylor swept all six singles matches.

Vanderdys put up a fight against Zemenova, the No. 3 ranked singles player in the nation before falling in straight sets. After dropping the first set 6-0, Vanderdys took a 4-3 lead in the second before Zemenova came back to win the last three games. Vanderdys, 20-12 overall, faced a ranked opponent for the fifth time in her last seven outings at No. 1 singles.

Torres Torres, playing in her eighth-straight match at No. 6 singles, claimed the most games of any Buff on the afternoon in a 6-3, 6-3 setback against Krchnakova. Torres Torres drops to 12-8 overall in singles play.

Up next for the Colorado women is the Big 12 Tennis Championships, April 27-30, right back here in Waco.
