Women's Basketball Announces Team Awards

BROOMFIELD, Colo. -- The annual University of Colorado Basketball Banquet was held Sunday evening at the Omni Interlocken Hotel in Broomfield as first-year head coach Kathy McConnell-Miller and the women's basketball staff handed out the team awards for the 2005-06 season.
Senior Whitney Law earned the Ultimate Team Award which is given to the player that represents everything that is positive about Colorado Athletics including attitude, desire, leadership and commitment. Law also won the Defense Award as she led CU back-court players in rebounding with a 4.5 per game average and was also second on the team in steals.
Junior Jasmina Ilic and sophomore Jackie McFarland were co-winners of the team's Offense Award. Ilic averaged nearly 15 points per game and had a team-best 55 3-point field goals. She became the first player in team history to score 33 or more points twice in one season, including a Big 12 season-high 36 against Nebraska on Jan. 4. McFarland led the Buffaloes and ranked sixth in the Big 12 in scoring, and her 516 total points tied for seventh place on the school single-season charts. She scored in double-digits in 28 of 30 games and scored 20 or more points nine times including a career-high 34 points against Cal State-Fullerton
McFarland was also the winner of the Crystal Adams Scholar-Athlete award and the Lisa Van Goor Rebounding award. She is just the second member of the CU women's basketball team to be named an Academic All-American and was the lone sophomore joining nine seniors and four juniors on the three Academic All-America teams which consisted of five players each. A two-time member of the Dean's List, she was an Academic All-District and first team Academic All-Big 12 performer as well. Her 277 rebounds were the third best total by a sophomore in team history and 10th best overall. Her 9.2 season average ranked fourth in the Big 12 and she had 14 games with 10 or more rebounds.
Senior Tami Garnett was recognized as the winner of the Community Service Award. Garnett has been a representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has participated in numerous department programs such as Read with the Buffs. This season she reached out to troubled youths in the Boulder juvenile court system by participating on a panel for a program called Justice High School. She was also the recipient of the 2006 Clancy A. Herbst, Jr., Student-Athlete Achievement Award presented to athletes who overcome personal, academic or emotional difficulties to succeed both academically and athletically.
Junior Courtney Wallace was presented with the Practice Player Award for her contributions on scout teams and her overall performance during practice sessions.
