BOULDER-- Junior men's golfer Patrick Grady and senior volleyball setter Ashley Nu'u were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of September 3-9. This is both Grady's and Nu'u's first career CU athlete of the week honors.
Nu'u narrowly edged out last week's winner Nikki Marshall, who became the first freshman (true or redshirt) to earn the award in their first week of competition.
Grady, a Broomfield, Colo. (Broomfield) native, paved the way for the Buffaloes to finish fourth in the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate by posting his best collegiate finish, as he turned in a final round 73 for a 224 total (8-over), tying for third overall. That bested a fourth place tie he had last May in the Maxwell Intercollegiate. His 1-over scorecard Sunday was the fifth best round posted on the day, and the third best among the top 20 finishers. He had five birdies on the day, and played his back nine (the front side as he started on No. 10) in 1-under par, one of the few players to do so Sunday as he closed strong. CU matched its best result in the first meet of the year since 1989.
Nu'u, an Aurora, Colo. (Smoky Hill) native, was named the Colorado Invitational MVP after leading the Buffs to three straight sweeps. Nu'u lead the Buffs to a .273 hitting percentage as Colorado collected 60 kills on 132 attacks. She dished out 43 assists, while adding six kills on nine errorless swings for here own .667 hitting percentage.
Against Central Connecticut State, she played two of the three games as CU hit a school record .528 hitting percentage. During the two games she played, CU hit .560 and .567 with 37 kills on 55 attacks and only six errors. Nu'u added two more kills, four digs and 23 assists.
She played three games against Southern Mississippi, however, was only brought in for the last five points in the third game to help CU finish off the Golden Eagles after freshman Kaitlyn Burkett started the game. She passed out 22 assists and CU hit .239. She added seven kills and hit .875, recorded two aces, four digs and two blocks assists. On the weekend, she recorded 15 kills on 19 errorless swings to hit .789. She collected 88 assists, four aces, nine digs, three blocks and 20.5 points as CU averaged a .329 attack percentage and held its opponents to an attack percentage of only .068.
Others nominated for this week's Jordon Dizon (football) and Nikki Marshall (soccer).
Football: Jordon Dizon, Junior, Kauai, Hawaii
Dizon recorded 15 tackles (8 solo, 7 assists), 2 quarterback sacks and three third down stops in Colorado's 14-10 loss to Colorado State. He also played key role in limiting CSU to just 15 rushing yards.
Soccer: Nikki Marshall, Freshman, Mead, Colo.
Marshall set her fourth school record in as many games this past weekend, notching goals in games at BYU and at Utah. In CU's upset win at No. 14 Utah, Marshall scored the game-tying goal in the second half, her fourth game in a row with a goal, breaking the previous record of three, held by five different Buffaloes. She also drew the penalty kick that was the game-winning goal for Colorado. Against BYU, Marshall got free on the right side to score CU's second goal in a loss at No. 22 BYU. She now has CU records for the most goals in a game (4), most points in a game (8), which were set last weekend, and most consecutive games with a goal (4), and most goals in a three game span (6), which were set this weekend.
