September 19, 2006 | General, Women's Golf, Volleyball
BOULDER- Junior women's golfer Lindsay Senger and junior volleyball outside hitter Amber Sutherland were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of September 10-16. This is both Senger and Sutherland's first career CU athlete of the week honors.
Senger, a Louisville, Colo. (Monarch) native, led the way for the Buffaloes, shooting a two-under school record par 214 for the tournament, leading Colorado to it's second ever team tournament victory at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic. She chipped in for birdie on her last hole to take second place, the highest finish for a Buff golfer since the 2004-05 season. It was just the eighth time a CU golfer has finished second or better. She finished with a one-over 73 to give her the best three round tournament score in school history, topping Hannah Hoch's previous best of 215 set at this same tournament two years ago and again at the Mountain View Collegiate in 2005. Senger posted a career best 70 in the second round to follow up a 71 in the opening loop.
Sutherland, a Glenwood Springs, Colo. (Glenwood Springs) native, averaged 5.88 kills, 2.75 digs, 0.62 blocks a game and hit .376 as she helped CU win its first two conference matches of the season, including a win over
No.17 Missouri. It is the first time CU has won its first two league contests since 2002.
Against Mizzou, she recorded a career-high 35 kills in the match to average 7.00 kpg. The 35 kills were the third highest amount in school history (the others are 36 and 40) and she became just the sixth Buff to record over 30 kills. She becomes just the second Buff on the list to hit over 35 kills as former Buff Sarah Lodge hit the other two higher marks. It was the first time since 1997 a Buff has hit over 30 kills. Sutherland's previous career-high was 26 against K-State in 2005. She hit just shy of .400 in the match with a hitting percentage at .397. Sutherland took just 63 swings and committed only 10 errors. She added four assists, an ace, 14 digs and a block assist for a career-high 36.5 points as she earned her fourth double-double of the year.
Sutherland also led the Buffs to a three-game sweep of Texas Tech in Lubbock to finish the week. In the contest, she tallied 12 kills, three assists, one ace, eight digs and four block assists while hitting .318. Colorado is currently on a five-match win streak.
Others nominated for this week's Hugh Charles (football) and Kara Linder (soccer).
Football: Hugh Charles, Junior, Keller, Texas
Charles carried the ball 20 times for 109 rushing yards and also added two receptions for 30 yards. He became the 48th player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in his career, ending the game with 1,045 yards (44th on the all-time list). It was his fourth career 100-yard game, his first since he rushed for career high 132 yards on 20 carries at Oklahoma State last Oct. 1 (also the first by a Buffalo since that contest).
Soccer: Kara Linder, Freshman, Lincoln, Neb.
Linder posted her second career shutout in CU's win over Denver on Friday. She had three saves on seven Denver shots.
