Colorado Falls To No. 5 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas ? The University of Colorado (6-4, 2-1 Big 12) fell in three to No. 5 Texas (8-2, 3-0 Big 12) 17-30, 19-30, 26-30 Wednesday night at Gregory Gymnasium in Austin, Texas to snap its' five-match win streak. Mallori Gibson led the Buffs with 11 kills as CU dropped its first conference match of the 2006 season.

 

The Longhorns held Colorado to a .184 attack percentage in the match, while UT recorded a .396 percentage. The Buffs recorded 35 kills on 103 swings. They committed 16 errors on the night, as UT put up 7.5 blocks. Texas tallied 57 killls. Lauren Schaefer recorded a team-high .455 hitting percentage with six kills on 11 attacks and just one error. Ashley Nu'u handed out 30 assists in the loss.

 

Colorado put up 6.0 blocks in the loss. Schaefer notched two of those, while Nu'u added two blocks assists. Austin Zimmerman recorded one block solo and one block assist.

 

The Buffs picked up 35 digs on the evening, while UT recorded 43. Leading the Buffs with 13 digs was Kristen Karlik. Nu'u added five and Amber Sutherland totaled four.

 

Colorado got on the board in the first game with a kill from Schaefer after Texas took the first four points. The Buffs got within two points at 6-8, but UT pulled away with two straight points. CU continued to fight back, but was forced to take a timeout at 9-14. Texas went on an 11-4 run, making the score 25-13. CU managed four more points, but UT closed the game at 30-17. Colorado hit .212 while Texas hit a scorching .485.

 

The second game started with a block by Nu'u and Schaefer, giving CU its first lead of the match. The two teams battled back and forth until UT took a 11-10 lead. The Longhorns went on a 9-1 run to take a 19-12 advantage. CU tried to rally back, but was unable to get back in the game as Texas won 30-19. Colorado hit just below .100 with an attack percentage of .094, while UT hit .471.

 

The Buffs took the first three points to start the third game and held the lead until Texas tied it up at 11. The Longhorns eventually pulled out to an 18-14 lead before CU used its first timeout. Texas continued to control the game, taking a 23-18 lead. Colorado rallied back within three at 26-29, but Texas closed it out with a kill from Jennifer Todd. CU hit a match-best .237 and held UT to .273.

 

The Buffs return home for a three-match homestand starting on Saturday, Sept. 23 against Kansas. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
