Colorado Soccer Falls 2-1 at Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. - The No. 11 University of Colorado women's soccer team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end here Sunday afternoon as the Buffaloes were upset at Oklahoma State by a score of 2-1.
Â
"It was a hard struggle with two pretty evenly matched teams," said head coach Bill Hempen. "Both teams made mistakes, they capitalized on the mistakes we made and that happens on the road, but I think they are quite good and I'm sure they're going to have a great season."
Â
The first half was uneventful as neither team netted a goal in the first 45 minutes. Â Colorado goalkeeper Kirstin Radlinski, making her first start of the season, made two first half saves, while OSU's Erin Stigler made three.
Â
Oklahoma State got on the board first, early in the second half. CU's Michelle Wenino was whistled for a foul in the penalty area, and the Cowgirls were awarded with a penalty kick. Â Yolanda Odenyo stepped up and buried it, giving OSU a 1-0 lead at the 48:45 mark.
Â
It was a short-lived lead for the Cowgirls. Colorado sophomore midfielder Alex Cousins netted her third goal of the season on a free kick to tie things up at 51:07, just two minutes and 19 seconds after OSU's penalty kick.
Â
"We got fouled outside of the box and Allie True and I lined up for the kick," said Cousins. "The keeper was setting up the wall and we didn't ask for 10 yards, so I shot it into the upper right corner because she was setting up the wall on the other side of the goal."
Â
The Cowgirls would respond at the 66:43 mark off a free kick of their own. CU's Jess Quador was shown a yellow card outside the 18 yard box after a foul.  Jesyca Rosholt took the free kick, which she served to Odenyo who headed it on goal. Radlinski was able to save that shot at point blank range, but the rebound was cleared to Sasa Jackson. She hit a shot from the top of the box into the upper 90, giving OSU a 2-1 lead.
Â
Colorado had four more shots in the half, but none of them were on goal and OSU came away with their third Big 12 win in a row.
Â
Offensively, Cousins led the way for Colorado with five shots total, two of which were on goal. OSU's Rosholt had seven shots, three of which were on goal. OSU outshot Colorado 12-11 for the match, with six shots in each half. The game was called very tight, with four players and both coaches getting put in the book. OSU committed 22 fouls, 15 in the second half, while CU had 12 in the entire match.
Â
"Obviously we are pretty disappointed with the result," said CU senior Laura Munnelly. "We knew coming in that in the Big 12 if you make mistakes, you will get punished for them. We made some mistakes today and hopefully we've learned from them. We just get back up, fix the things that went wrong and get ready for Nebraska on Friday."
Â
Colorado, now 6-2-1 on the season and 1-1 in the Big 12, will return home this week before heading back on the road to Lincoln, Neb., to take on the Cornhuskers on Friday, Sept. 29 at 3 p.m. MDT. Nebraska fell 3-2 in double overtime at Iowa State on Sunday in Ames. CU will then return home and take on Wyoming on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 1 p.m. at Prentup Field. Admission and parking are free.
