Golfers Finish Eighth At UNM Tucker Invitational
September 24, 2006 | Men's Golf
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? Behind a solid performance from fifth-year senior Blake Moore, the University of Colorado men's golf team finished eighth here Saturday in the New Mexico William H. Tucker Invitational.
Host New Mexico dueled with Brigham Young, as the Lobos and Cougars were never more than a stroke apart after each round. UNM edged BYU by two shots in the final round to rally for the win with an 874 (10-over par) team score, with the Cougars (875) holding off a charge from Pepperdine (877) and Texas A&M (878). UNLV used the best team score in the third round to vault into fifth (881).
Colorado finished eighth with an 888 score, posting a district win over Missouri (which finished 18th) as well as defeating in-state rivals CSU, DU and Air Force along with perennial top 10 team Arizona.
Moore, who sat out the 2005-06 season for assorted reasons, tied for 11th overall after posting a 72-74-73?219 scorecard on the 7,345-yard, par-72 University of New Mexico Championship Course. It was his second best collegiate finish, topped only by a tie for eighth in the 2004 Purdue Boilermaker Invitational.
He played steady in the first two rounds, scoring pars of 28 of 36 holes, with four birdies, two bogeys and two doubles. But he had five bogeys against a single birdie heading down the stretch, and whereas the “old” Moore might have lost focus, the senior version finished with an eagle, a birdie and two pars, one coming on the toughest par-4 hole (No. 4) on the course.
“I was very pleased with Blake's effort, rallying to play the last three holes three-under par in impressive on any course,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said. “He really hung in there, because he didn't putt that well and still posted our top effort, an 11th place finish, so I'm excited about what he will be able to accomplish.”
Junior Patrick Grady and sophomore Derek Tolan tied for 31st with 8-over 224 scores, as both converged at the end of the meet after starting in different directions. Grady shot a final round70, the fifth best finishing score in the 108-man field, while Tolan closed with76, after he opened with a 70, the sixth best score in round one in which he had scored three birdies on his first five holes.
Senior Derek O'Neill recorded a third consecutive 76 in the final round to close with a 228 total to tie for 60th, with freshman Luke Symons tying for 66th after wrapping things up with a 78 for a 229 score.
New Mexico's Charlie Beljan claimed medalist honors with a 6-under par 210 score, though he held off a charging Jarred Texter from UNLV, who recorded a 4-under 68 to finish one stroke back.
“I think overall we can take some confidence from this tournament, because we only finished 14 strokes out of first in a really tough field and didn't play our best golf,” Edwards said. “We did a really good job of staying in our game plan, had a good strong finish and came back to beat a couple of teams who were ahead of us most of the day. We had a tough stretch in the middle of our round, but hung in there, paying attention to our routine and were confident to where I think that salvaged the tournament. It was important to beat a couple of teams that we needed to. We have two weeks to get ready for our next tournament in the Chicago area, and we'll work hard between now and then to keep improving.”
The Buffs will resume action October 8-9 at the Windon Memorial Classic in Glencoe, Ill.; Northwestern University is the host.
NOTE?Edward McGlasson, an honorable mention All-American for CU his senior year in 2005-06, took his first step toward earning his PGA Tour card as he tied for eighth over the weekend in the Pre-Qualifying event in LaQuinta, Calif. The top 42 advanced to the first stage of Tour Qualifying later this month in Florida. McGlasson turned in a 4-under 284 score, and led the tournament after each of the first two rounds as he opened with a 66 and followed that up with an even-par 72.
