Gelso and Grevsgaard Ski to CU Athlete of the Week Honors

January 17, 2007 | General, Skiing

BOULDER-- Nordic skiers Matt Gelso, a freshman, and Maria Grevsgaard, a junior, were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of January 7-13. This is the first CU athlete of the week honor for both Gelso and Grevsgaard's collegiate careers.

Gelso, a Truckee, Calif., (Truckee) native, helped Colorado win the Utah Invitational with first and third place finishes in his first two collegiate races. In the 20K freestyle, Gelso dueled with Denver's Rene Reisshauer for the bulk of the race but got some separation in the final kilometer in winning his first collegiate race in a 42:22.3 time. Gelso's win was the first by a male CU freshman since 1990, when Bjorn Svensson captured the classic race at the NCAA West Regional. He is the first American to ever win a Nordic race for the Buffaloes since the sport went coed in 1983. He also took third in the 10K classical race held at Soldier Hollow, Utah.

Grevsgaard, a Geilo, Norway, (Norges Toppidretts Gymnas) native, won the 5k classic race and finished sixth in the 10K freestyle race to help Colorado win the Utah Invitational. It was her second collegiate win of her career, as she cruised to the win in an impressive 18.2 seconds.

Others nominated for this week's Dominique Coleman (Men's Basketball) and Jackie McFarland (Women's Basketball).

Men's Basketball: Dominique Coleman, Senior, Oakland, Calif.

Coleman averaged 11.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in Colorado's 0-2 week against Big 12 Conference opponents. Coleman scored a team-high 17 points and career-best 13 rebounds against No.8/9 ranked Texas A&M. He also added four assists and two steals. Against Oklahoma, Coleman scored six points with seven rebounds and two assists.

Women's Basketball: Jackie McFarland, Junior, Derby, Kan.

McFarland recorded 15 points and eight rebounds in Colorado's 68-49 loss to No.23 Texas. She went 5-7 from the floor and 5-6 from the free-throw line in addition to one steal in Austin.
