BARDONECCHIA, Italy - University of Colorado freshmen Stefan Hughes and Drew Roberts both posted top 40 finishes in the men's giant slalom Thursday, the first alpine skiing event held at the 2007 World University Games.
Hughes finished 32nd in a two-run time of 1:54.04, while Roberts finished 35th in 1:55.31. They were the fifth and sixth American finishers, respectively, in the field, which consisted of 116 skiers from universities from around the world.
CU head coach Richard Rokos is serving as the head coach and team leader for the United States, which placed three skiers in the top six, one of top performances by the United States in recent memory. The University of Denver's Adam Cole won the bronze medal with a third place finish in 1:49.91, as Italy's Arronne Pieruz captured the gold in 1:48.64 with Filip Trejbal of the Czech Republic claiming the silver in 1:49.52.
The women's giant slalom will be held Friday, with two CU skiers set to compete. Sophomore Lisa Perricone will start in the 20th position while junior Lucie Zikova, the reigning NCAA slalom champion, will start in the 20th position; however, she is representing her native Czech Republic. Junior Rachel Roosevelt is also with the team in Italy but was not set to ski in the giant slalom as of Thursday afternoon.
