Dodson and Jendrian Earn CU Athlete of the Week Honors

January 30, 2007 | General, Tennis, Track and Field

BOULDER-- Sophomore sprinter Jeremy Dodson (Indoor Track) and sophomore Franziska Jendrian (tennis) were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of January 21-27. This is the first CU athlete of the week honor of the year for Jendrian and the second consecutive week Dodson has earned the award, making it his second career honor and Jendrian's third.

Dodson, a Denver, Colo., (George Washington/Arkansas) native, set a personal best 6.76, which was good for first place. Dodson, a sophomore transfer, tied the seventh-best time in CU history in the event and became the third fastest performer for the Buffs behind Jonathan Prather and Marcus Stiggers. Dodson ran an impressive mark of 6.84 in the preliminaries, only to beat that mark later in the finals.

Jendrian, a Rodleben, Germany, (
Sportgymnasium Magdeburg) native, won a key singles match and teamed up for one of the deciding doubles points leading the Colorado tennis team to a 6-1 upset victory over No. 34 Arizona at the Harvest House last Friday. Jendrian collaborated with teammate Monica Milewski at No. 2 doubles defeating the Wildcats pair 8-6. The point proved to be a crucial enabling CU (2-0) to take two of three doubles points for the key point. In singles she clinched the team victory at No. 4 winning her singles match in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-1 for her ninth victory this year. Earlier in the week, Jendrian helped the Buffaloes blank Air Force, 9-0 in the season-opener with a three-set victory at No. 4 singles. She also teamed with Milewski for another win at No. 2 doubles.

Others nominated for this week's Richard Roby (Men's Basketball), Jackie McFarland (Women's Basketball) and Amberly Casey (track and field).

Men's Basketball: Richard Roby, Junior, San Bernardino, Calif.

Roby averaged 20.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in Colorado's two games during the week. The guard scored a game-high 30 points and seven rebounds in CU's 97-74 loss at No. 8 Kansas. It was Roby's sixth career 30-point effort and third of the season. Against Missouri, Roby scored 11 points. He shot .519 from the field in two games, including a 10-for-15 performance at KU. Roby has led the Buffaloes in scoring nine times this season and has scored in double-digits 15 of 17 times in games through Jan. 29.

Women's Basketball: Jackie McFarland, Junior, Derby, Kan.

McFarland averaged 16 points and nine rebounds in two games for Colorado this past week. In CU's 61-58 loss at Oklahoma State, McFarland recorded 13 points on 5-9 shooting and ten rebounds. She also recorded 19 points on 9-17 shooting and eight rebounds in the Buffs' 61-48 loss at Missouri.

Indoor Track: Amberly Casey, Senior, Boulder, Colo.

Casey recorded a personal best in the triple jump with a mark of 39-09.75. She earned a leap of 19-01.25 in the long jump.
