November 16, 2007 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. - The University of Denver women's soccer team ended with a 5-0 loss to Portland this afternoon at Prentup Field in the First Round of the 2007 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship.
"We had a great performance, did what we wanted to do," said Portland head coach Garrett Smith. "We limited their chances, got some shots on goal and now we're moving on. I think we had a good performance all-around, we face a different challenge every game and we did well today."
Denver (12-5-4) had a scoring chance in the 28th minute off a corner kick by senior defender Jamie Dierberger. After a header went straight up, senior midfielder Jenna Billingsley kicked a shot that was blocked at the goal line. Sophomore forward Mariah Johnston headed the rebound just wide of the goal.
Portland (16-3-0) scored in the 31st minute, when Michelle Enyeart passed the ball through the Denver defense, and Kendra Chandhoke beat DU goalkeeper Mackenzie Snyder to the ball and sent it into the empty net.
Enyeart set up the Pilots' second goal 10 minutes later, setting up Angie Woznuk, who scored from the left on a 2-on-1 attack, to take the 2-0 lead over the Pioneers.
Portland outshot Denver 17 to three in the first half, and the Pilots put four shots on goal to DU's one.
Sophie Schmidt broke past DU's defense in the 60th minute, shooting from the top of the box off Snyder's hands and into the left side of the goal, putting Portland ahead 3-0.
Schmidt scored a second goal four minutes later. Snyder saved a hard shot by Schmidt, but the rebound found its way to Elli Reed, who set up the goal-scoring header by Schmidt.
Enyeart, after setting up the first two goals, scored a goal of her own in the 88th minute after she beat the keeper and buried the ball in the back left corner of the net.
"We knew we'd have to absorb a lot of pressure from them, we just didn't think it'd be so much so early," said Denver head coach Jeff Hooker. "Mackenzie (Snyder) did a good job of keeping us in the game; she played a great game for us. We were a little dinged up and we had to be 100 percent to have a chance to win today."
The Pilots outshot the Pioneers 29 to six overall, with Enyeart taking six shots total.
Portland will now advance to the second round where they will face host Colorado on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m. at Prentup Field. Colorado defeated the University of Hawai'i 2-0 in their first round match-up.
