Women?s Golf Signs Childs, Talley to NLI

BOULDER ? University of Colorado women's golf coach Anne Kelly has signed Emily Childs (Alameda, Calif.) and Emily Talley (Napa, Calif.) to a National Letter of Intent, Kelly announced Tuesday.
Both from Northern California, Childs and Talley are not only members of the Junior Golf Association of Northern California, but they are also close friends and looking forward to playing together as freshmen at Colorado next year.
“I am extremely excited about signing Emily Childs and Emily Talley for the 2008-09 season,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “It will be the ?Year of the Emily's.' Both of these players are quite talented and I expect that they will raise the level of our program to new heights. Both of these student athletes also bring what every coach in looking for to a team: leadership, confidence, competitiveness and academic excellence. Assistant Coach Brent Franklin and I both realized immediately that both Emily Childs and Emily Talley understand what we are trying to accomplish with this program and bring the intangible qualities necessary for our team to be highly competitive on a national level.”
KELLY ON CHILDS ? “Emily Childs is an accomplished player with several years of success on the national level. She has proven herself to be a competitive player in AJGA tournaments and USGA events. She is hard working and has the level of competitiveness and internal desire that will help her to be a very successful collegiate golfer. She understands the balance of golf as an individual sport and combining that with the team aspect of college golf. Emily was highly recruited by several major universities and we knew we were up against strong competition to obtain her to commitment to CU. During her official visit to our campus, she bonded with our team instantly and fell in love with Boulder and the school. I believe she will emerge as one of our team leaders and I look for Emily to have an outstanding career at the University of Colorado. We are thrilled to have her as a Buff for next season!”
KELLY ON TALLEY ? “Emily Talley is an up-and-comer. When I was looking at results for Emily Childs I kept seeing Emily Talley's name and the low scores she was shooting in California tournaments. As I researched this player more I realized she definitely is the type of player that we are looking for. In the meantime, I received an email form Emily Talley stating her interest in the University of Colorado and our golf program. The timing just seemed to be perfect and on her official visited she also loved Boulder, the campus and our current team members.
“Emily picked up golf a little later as compared to many players at her level of ability. She originally was competitive tennis player, but switched over to golf. Every year she has continually improved and this past summer proved that she is competitive on the national level. Emily brings incredible amount of enthusiasm, passion with her and we feel very fortunate to have her join our team.”
Emily Childs ? 5-5 ? Alameda, Calif. (Alameda High School)
HIGH SCHOOL ? Childs was the team captain of the first Alameda High School girl's golf team in school history this year and she led them to a first place finish in the North Coast Section Championship. Childs placed fourth individually and took fourth again in the Nor-Cal Championship, securing a spot in the CIF/State Championships, where she finished sixth overall. Prior to her senior campaign, Childs was an individual participant in high school tournaments and took back-to-back first place honors in the Tilden Women's High School Invitational and the Bay Shore Athletic League Championship. She earned First Team All-League honors and was named First Team All-East Bay as a junior. Before wrapping up her prep career at AHS, Childs attended Bishop O'Dowd High School as a freshman and sophomore. She earned First Team All-League honors both years and was the team's Rookie of the Year in 2004 and Most Valuable Player in 2005. Childs is a member of the AJGA and USGA and has had a great deal of experience at the national level. She participated in a number of American Junior Golf Tour events, placing second twice in AJGA Fidelity Investments and AJGA Coca-Cola at Boyne Highlands. In 2007, Childs was awarded a medal for qualifying for four United States Golf Association Girl's Championships. She also participated in the Junior America's Cup this past July, finishing fourth overall after carding a 73-77-73. Childs set the tournament record low-score of 65 at the 2007 State Fair Championship and the women's course record of 68 at the 2007 Northern California Players Championship over the summer. Childs lists her biggest moment in her golfing career as making it to the NCS Finals with the Boy's team in 2006 as the only girl playing in the tournament.
PERSONAL ? Emily Jaclyne Childs was born on June 2, 1990 and is the daughter of John and Sandy Childs of Alameda, Calif. She has one sister, Carly (13). Her cousin Adin Brown played soccer for William and Mary and was a member of the U.S. National Olympic team and a goalkeeper for the Colorado Rapids and New England Revolution and is currently playing professional soccer in Norway. Her other cousin, Chris Brown, is a senior goalkeeper at Boston College and just led his team to their first ACC Championship over the weekend. Childs was recruited by over 60 schools, including the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Texas. She chose Colorado because of its excellent coaching staff, team, and academics.
Emily Talley ? 5-9 ? Napa, Calif. (R.L. Stevenson School)
HIGH SCHOOL ? Talley lettered two years in golf, once as a junior Justin-Siena High School in Napa, Calif., and again as a senior at R.L. Stevenson School in Pebble Beach, Calif. Talley was First Team All-League and voted Most Valuable Player as a junior, leading Justin-Siena to the MCAL League Championship. She entered as an individual in the North Coast Sections and placed sixth out of 144 prep golfers. Talley transferred to R.L. Stevenson where she received First Team All-League honors again and helped the Pirates to a first place finish in the Mission Trails Athletic League, Central Coast Section and Northern California Championships in 2007. She finished 15th individually at the California State Championships and her team took second, falling just one stroke short of the winner. Talley also represented Northern California in the 30th Girls Junior America's Cup in Portland, Ore. and finished ninth out of 72 players from an international field of 18 teams. She participated in a number of JGANC tournaments and, in a seven-month span, Talley took first place in nine different tournaments. Her best career round in competition is a 68, a feat Talley accomplished on two different occasions. Her home course is the Napa Valley Country Club and she holds the Girl's junior record with an even-par 72. Prior to taking up competitive golf, Talley was an accomplished tennis player and was a two-time First Team All-League tennis player at Justin-Siena.
PERSONAL ? Emily Watson Talley was born on August 5, 1990 and is the daughter of Robert and Kimberly Talley of Napa, Calif. She has one sister, Caroline (19), who is a sophomore at the University of Denver. A California Scholarship Federation member, she is interested in studying Business or Engineering at Colorado. Both of Talley's grandparents, along with her great-grandmother attended the University of Colorado. Talley was recruited by Tulane, Santa Clara and UC Davis, but chose Colorado because she fell in love with Boulder, the school, the women's golf coaches and team, and especially loved watching Ralphie run at the football game.
