Siena-Colorado quotes

November 23, 2007 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Kathy McConnell-Miller

General
”I believe that our team was prepared, they were excited to come home and play in front of our fans.  We had great intensity and excitement in the locker room and I think we were ready to play Siena, we just didn't play well.  Siena played extremely well and hit big shots when they needed to.”

On Siena

“Characteristically, that is not what they normally shoot (percentage wise), but that is on us.  We gave them open shots and easy shots in the paint.  We allowed three players to beat us.  Their team played their game and we allowed three players to dominate us.”

On The Games Breaks

“When you play as hard as Siena was playing the breaks are going to go your way.  They worked hard, and when they needed a board or a break they got it.”

On Team Struggles

“We just came out struggling.  We did alright in the beginning when they were playing a man, but when they switched to their 2-3 zone we couldn't get anything going offensively.  At that point we stopped playing and allowed ourselves to settle for outside shots.  We stopped trying to get the looks that we wanted.  That timeout (where they switched defenses) changed the momentum and the outcome of the game.”

Colorado Players

Forward Jackie McFarland

GENERAL?“It is definitely surprising, I feel like we're a much better team this year then we have been in the past.  I think we had the better talent but they definitely out worked us.  We really wanted to come home and play in front of our home crowd but we didn't play like it.”

ON THE LOSS?“It was just one of those nights, everything was going their way.  I'm not trying to take anything away from them, they out played us tonight but no one shoots 80 percent from the floor for the first ten minutes of the second half.  We didn't play the way we needed to defensively and that is evident when you allow three players to score more then twenty points.”

ON BOUNCING BACK?“More then anything we need to come together as a team.  We keep saying that we have great team chemistry but when we step out on the floor we just don't have it yet.  I think the youth of our team has something to do with it, as well as the new offense.  Right now we just need to focus on getting better and realizing that it isn't how you start, but how you finish.  We need to finish tomorrow and then with the rest of our season.”

Guard Whitney Houston

GENERAL?“They wanted it more then we did tonight.  We need to work harder and play better team defense.  We need to focus more and know where we need to be and be there.”

ON THREE-POINT SHOOTING?“We were getting good looks tonight, we just weren't hitting them.  It didn't have anything to do with them, we've seen a zone (defense) before we just weren't hitting our shots.  We need to get in the gym and work harder to get better.”

ON MAKING A RUN LATE IN THE SECOND HALF?“The run started because we started to play defense.  We finally started to play team defense and apply pressure, that is when we went on our run.  Then we started fouling them and sending them to the line and they were making their free throws.”

Siena Head Coach Gina Castelli

GENERAL

“I think the players just really wanted to win. They weren't going to let a run by Colorado get them down, which in the past, has happened to us. I think it was all of the players wanting it more tonight. Obviously they are a very good team; they shoot the three well, they have a lot of weapons inside. For us to stop them and stop their runs by bringing pressure was good.”

ON STARTING THE SECOND HALF

“When shots are going in against the zone, they are going to keep going in. But when they weren't going in early, I think it got mentally tough for the Colorado players. We just stuck with what we were doing, even though they did hit a couple of threes, we just felt that they were still taking them tentatively. The run in the beginning of the second half was significant, but it was the focus of our girls more than anything else.”

ON GOING TO THE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP

“We have the opportunity to be in the championship game and it is going to be tough for us. This is where we want to be, and we are glad that we're here”

Senior guard Melissa Manzer

ON HER PERFORMANCE

“It all felt good tonight. I'd have to say that our last game we won on the road, we didn't start out that good. But after seeing us have success on the road, I think it has really carried over, and there is no looking back so far for us. For the past few games I would say that the game ball has to go to the team.”

ON WINNING AGAINST A BIG 12 SCHOOL

“It's huge. As long as I have been at Siena we have never done anything like this. I think this is the first time our school has beaten a Big 12 team, and it feels great to be going to the championship game tomorrow.”

GENERAL

“We knew it was going to be a tough game. We didn't expect to come in here and blow anyone out. It just showed how bad we wanted it. They were bigger than us in size, but you can't measure a team's heart and we really gave everything we had out there, and we came out successful.”
