Colorado-Northern Colorado Quotes

November 28, 2007 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Kathy McConnell-Miller

General

“Tonight we had some great individual performances, but I think that collectively as a team we struggled with some combinations on the floor, and we do a lot of things that do not really help us. We do not take advantage of opportunities, and we always feel like the next play we can get it. We are growing in certain areas, and we are struggling in some. But individually, three players that stand out are Jackie [McFarland] with 26 points and 8 rebounds in 36 minutes, and Susie [Powers] and Aija [Putnina] also performed well tonight. Overall I thought it was a good effort, but I think we can do better. I thought Northern Colorado did a nice job, and they challenged us and made us work for everything we got.”

On Playing Against the Zone

“We are going to face it a lot this year. This summer we told our team to work on their three pint shooting, but I think they took that the wrong way and thought that was what we were going to rely on. That is not what are looking to do; we want a balanced attack. Half way through the first half when we gave Jackie [McFarland] more touches things opened up. Early on I think that we settled too much for the three pointer.”

On Starting Hannah Skildum

“She played really well against Siena and Rice, and she also had a couple of good practices. She is playing with a lot of confidence, and I wanted to see what look that gave us. She is big and athletic. She also plays better defense on the perimeter then most, and we knew that they could shoot from the perimeter. Probably not the best game for her, but I thought it was a natural to put her in the lineup tonight.”

Colorado Players

F Jackie McFarland

ON STARTING SLOW--"It's something we've struggled with not just this year but also in the past.  I think it's a little bit of nerves and the different players out there, its kinda like were seeing who is going to step up, and I think we wait to see what the other team does instead of making our mark and making them react to us.  We kinda wait and see how they are going to play and then change our style to them.”

G Susie Powers

ON WHITLEY COX-“Cox really did play a good game, she did put up 21 points, it was an honor to guard her, she is a great player.”

ON HER ASSISTS-“Well if you throw Jackie the ball you're going to get an assist.”

ON PLAYING GUARD- “Playing the point for me comes natural to me.  Under Coach Miller I feel I know what she is thinking and what she wants, and its fun to play under her.”

Northern Colorado Head Coach Jaime White

General

“It's a little different this year because we have some kids that can shoot the ball and we have some kids that can score. It really helps when Kate Kevorken can hit that three. We had the early lead and I think we were shooting 100-percent in the first five minutes. But, good teams are going to come back and they're going to change it up on you. Colorado did that?they started changing things up and switching screens. We have to be able to attack better.”

On Jackie McFarland

“It was McFarland 7, Bears 0 to start the second half. She's unreal. She's one of the greatest players I've seen since I've been at the Division I level.”

On Late Run

“We felt like we could go on a run at the end there. But, we got a little shy inside and we quit taking the ball inside. Courtney (Stoermer) hit a couple three's and she just picked up a lot of trash out there. We're getting there?slowly, but surely.”
