November 03, 2007 | Volleyball
BOULDER ? Emilee Sisco led CU with a career-best 27 kills as the University of Colorado volleyball team snapped a 14-match Big 12 losing streak on Saturday against Texas Tech. CU rallied back after dropping the first game in extra points and took the next three. The game scores were 32-34, 30-20, 30-15 and 30-19.
“I think we've always had this in us,” head coach Pi'i Aiu said. “We've played well at times and today was the first time that we played steady throughout the whole match.
“The big thing is that we matched up pretty well (with Texas Tech). Kaitlyn Burkett did a nice job passing, so the middle was always a threat. She did a nice job moving the ball around and did a nice job driving to the ball and taking it high.”
The Buffs recorded the win despite having one of their heavy weapons sidelined. Lauren Schaefer was on the bench due to an injury suffered earlier in the season.
“I think we came out just wanting a win,” Kaitlyn Burkett said “And we knew that Texas Tech was the opportunity and despite the injuries on the team, other girls were stepping up and everybody was doing their job and more tonight. And I think that is what pulled us to the win.”
The 27 kills by Sisco was the most recorded by a
“I think we came in really confident and without question that we were going to win but we also worked really hard,” Sisco said.
Burkett also had a career-high match, recording 64 assists in the win for CU.
“She did a really nice job for us tonight,” Sisco said. “She moved the ball around and really kept us balanced. It was a great performance.”
The Buffs dished out 75 assists. Alex Buth added five and Mallori Gibson and Callie Webster each added two.
“The sets were great and the passing was really good,” Sisco said. “We were just doing what we needed to do.”
CU recorded 81 kills on 154 attacks with 28 errors to hit .344. Gibson and Schylur Edelman also recorded double-digit kills for the Buffs. Gibson tallied 18 and Edelman added 13. Both amassed a .500 hitting percentage.
Rosie Steinhaus, who was starting in place of Schaefer, turned in the best hitting percentage of the match at .600. She recorded seven kills on 10 swings with one error.
“The hitters were the difference,” Burkett said. “They were going off and taking aggressive swings and just did a great job.
Emilee was doing a great job tonight.”
The Buffaloes dominated after dropping the first game. CU used a 6-0 run to open up the second game. The Buffs also got out to a quick start in the third game by going up 20-10. The fourth game took a little while for CU to take control. TTU got within two points at 13-11. The Buffs took off with a 6-1 run to take a 19-12 advantage and eventually won the game and the match.
“The second, third and fourth games were a little more calm,” Burkett said. “I think when they made a great play, we were able to step back and make our own plays and that really made the difference.”
CU hit just .245 in the first game with 20 kills. The Buffs hit a match-high .441 in the second game (22k-7e-34att). CU also hit an impressive .406 in the third game, recording 17 kills. The fourth game was slightly lower with a .333 attack percentage.
The Buffs improved to 6-17 overall and 1-14 in the Big 12 while TTU dropped to 7-17 and 1-14. The two are tied for 10th in the conference.
