Golfers Finish 12th In Hawaii
February 09, 2007 | Men's Golf
WAIKOLOA,
No. 2 Stanford rallied to catch No. 3 Oklahoma State at the end of 54 holes with identical 803 scores, and then won on the first playoff hole to seize the team title. The Cowboys had a four stroke lead entering the final round over the Cardinal and No. 20 Georgia Tech, but the Yellow Jackets fell off the pace and finished fourth, 15 shots out of the lead and two back of No. 5 Arizona State, which snuck into third.
Junior Michael Baird paced the Buffaloes from start to finish, as he recorded a 1-under 69 Friday for a 205 total, with the 5-under effort for the week earning him an 18th place tie on the 6,738-yard, par-70 Waikoloa Village Golf Course. His performance tied Kane Webber and teammate Patrick Grady for the lowest 54-hole score in school history on a par-70 golf course; Webber, now on the European Tour, shot a 205 in winning the 2004 Perry Maxwell Intercollegiate in Ardmore, Okla., with Grady matching the score in finishing fourth in the same tournament last May.
Sophomore Derek Tolan finished things up with a 71 for a 211 total, which was good for the ninth best score by a Buff under the same circumstances. He tied for 47th overall.
Senior Blake Moore (76-215), Grady (73-217) and freshman Luke Symons (74-225) rounded out the CU quintet competing here.
“We really struggled today, although the guys did a good job overall hanging in there,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said. “Michael did a great job posting an under-par score when he didn't have his best stuff. As a team, we played to not make mistakes instead of playing to create opportunities. We were a little nervous today and played tight, and that should work itself out over the course of the next couple of tournaments. So while disappointed with how we finished up here, we're excited to improve, and look forward to building on a good spring season.”
The Buffaloes will return to action at the end of the month (February 26-27) in the Houston All-American.
