Pifer Earns All-American Honors
March 10, 2007 | Track and Field
Pifer placed third in the mile, scoring six points for the Buffs. He ran the mile in 4:00.93. It was the third time this year Pifer has run the mile in under 4:01.00. Pifer, who owns the school record, also owns the top four times in CU history in the mile.
“Stephen was third in the mile,” head coach Mark Wetmore said. “It was a good time for him. He led, led and led as he often does and that was our plan. A couple of guys got him in the last 125 meters. I am happy with his race. He did an awful lot of work. He was fifth a year ago and ran just over four minutes today. It was a good run for him.”
“Looking at it from a paper standpoint, it was an improvement from last year moving up from fifth to third,” Pifer said. “It was pretty good considering I didn't have a very good month of training in December; so, to get third in the mile at indoors, which we aren't really geared for, it a pretty good accomplishment.”
Leonel Manzano of
Jenny Barringer finished 12th in the 3,000-meter run. She clocked a time of 9:23.58. Texas Tech's Sally Kiyego won the event in a time of 9:02.05. Barringer has been suffering from a cold for the past few weeks.
“Jenny didn't have a good day in the 3,000,” Wetmore said. “She told Coach Burroughs that she did not feel very well the whole way. The cold that she had at the Big 12 and last week and now this week was bothering her; I think racing three weekends in a row was just too much for someone in her first indoor season and she looked flat and felt it. She is ready to get back to work and will put this season behind her as she gets ready for the outdoor season.”
The Buffs will start their outdoor season on Saturday, March 17 as they host the Potts Invitational.
