Women's Golfers Nab Second At SJSU Invite

March 07, 2007 | Women's Golf

SAN JOSE, Calif. ? The University of Colorado women's golf team, on the strength of a school-best three top 10 finishes, tied for second in the San Jose State Spartan Invitational completed here Tuesday.

The Buffaloes finished with a team score of 892, trailing only host and No. 23 ranked San Jose State, which rode a stellar second round to the team title.  The Spartans had an 877 score to win by 15 strokes, though were tied with CU after the first round before posting the best single round score of the meet in round two.

Colorado tied with No. 51 California for runner-up honors, and bested six teams ranked ahead of it the latest GolfStat rankings, including Cal-Irvine (No. 34) and Hawaii (No. 47), who finished fourth and sixth, respectively.

Coach Anne Kelly took a very young team to San Jose, as three freshmen, a sophomore and a junior comprised the CU quintet, and they responded.

Freshman Julie Kim was CU's top finisher, as she posted a collegiate best effort in tying for third with a 220 total; she closed play Tuesday with a even-par 72 on the Almaden Country Club course layout.  Her previous best was an 11th place finish in the CSU Ptarmigan Classic last fall.

Another frosh, Dominique Pytlewski, and sophomore Lindsay Caljouw, both tied for eighth with 223 totals; the pair both recorded final round 77s.

While the second time CU had three finishers in the top 20 this year (the Buffs had four finish in top 20 at Ptarmigan), it was the first time in program history the school had three in the top 10.

UC-Irvines's Selanee' Henderson won medalist honors with an impressive 69-71-70?210 scorecard, winning by two strokes.  Only two players in the field were under par for the entire tournament.

Colorado's opening round of 290 was the second best single round of the season, and it helped the Buffs to their second best tournament score in 2006-07, trailing an 862 they posted in the CSU meet.
