Torres Torres Clinches Team Tennis Win Over Cornhuskers, 4-3

BOULDER ? The University of Colorado tennis team received strong play from junior Gleisy Torres Torres and freshman Camila Belassi at their respective singles positions helping the Buffaloes rally and defeat the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the South Campus Tennis Courts.

The No. 35 nationally ranked Buffaloes have now won six straight matches, their longest in eight years, improve to 16-6 overall and 9-2 in the Big 12 Conference.

The victory also clinches CU as the No. 4 seed and a first round bye at next week's Big 12 Tennis Championships in Kansas City, April 26-29. The Buffs will play the winner of No. 5 Oklahoma State/No. 12 Iowa State on Friday.

CU started the day off on the right foot sweeping the doubles competition with Torres Torres and Victoria Almagno teaming up for the first time in the dual season defeating Marianne Cicmanec and Ashley Finnegan, 8-2 at No. 3. The Buffaloes clinched the doubles point at the No. 1 slot with Franziska Jendrian and Monica Milewski edging Imke Reimers and Diana Kuhl, 8-5. Jendrian/Milewski improved their conference record to 8-2 and 15-6 during spring play.

At No. 2, the duo of Melisa Esposito and Martina Sedivec ended the conference regular season unbeaten defeating Maria Ring and Wiveca Swarting, 8-5. It was Esposito/Sedivec's first match together at the No. 2 slot and it increased their Big 12 record to 9-0 and 13-2 overall.

With momentum and a 1-0 lead, the Cornhuskers (12-7, 4-6) answered quickly evening the match at No. 1 singles with Imke Reimers upsetting No. 35 Monica Milewski, 6-1, 6-1 for her 16th win in 19 spring outings.

With the team score tied at one, CU's Esposito cruised to her sixth straight singles victory defeating Cicmanec in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 helping CU take a 2-1 advantage.

The Cornhuskers rallied once again and regained the team score taking the No. 3 and No. 6 slots for a 3-2 advantage setting up Belassi and Torres Torres' heroics that would help the Buffs secure their most wins in the conference since the 1999 season with nine.

Belassi held on in three sets after taking the opening set over Diana Huhl, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 2.  On the court next to her, Torres Torres fought back from a set down edging Maria Ring 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 4 position for her 25th singles victory.

Belassi has now won four of her last six singles matches, while Torres Torres has triumphed in six of her last seven. 

The team victory was CU's 16th, the most in the eight-year coaching career of head coach Nicole Kenneally.

 

Match Notes: Colorado leads the head-to-head series with Nebraska, 17-13 ... CU's home record improves to 7-1 and a perfect 4-0 at the South Campus outdoor courts ... CU swept all three doubles slots for the seventh time this spring (6-1 record) ... CU's six match winning streak is their longest since winning six in a row during the 1999 spring ...Senior Martina Sedivec played her final home match improving her doubles record to 15-3 in dual play and 22-4 during the 2006-07 season. She has won 53 career doubles matches ranking, tying for ninth all-time in school history ... Sedivec leads the team in doubles victories with 22, followed by Franziska Jendrian (20-8), Melisa Esposito (19-5) and Monica Milewski (17-8) ... Three players won over 20 singles matches, Monica Milewski, Gleisy Torres Torres (25), Franziska Jendrian (21) are the first CU trio to win 20 or more matches in a single year since the 1998-99 season.
