Golfers Finish Eighth At The Maxwell

Golfers Finish Eighth At The Maxwell

May 13, 2007 | Men's Golf

ARDMORE, Okla. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team wrapped up its preparations for the NCAA Championships here Sunday with an eighth place finish in the Perry Maxwell Intercollegiate.

After Monday's U.S. Open Local Qualifying at Walking Stick Golf Club outside Pueblo, the Buffaloes will depart Tuesday for Sugar Grove, Ill., to participate in the NCAA Central Regional, scheduled Thursday through Saturday in the Chicago suburb.

Fifth-ranked Oklahoma State cruised to a seven-shot win, as the Cowboys were 60-under par in posting a team score of 780.  No. 21 Tulsa grabbed second at 787, with No. 50 SMU third with 797 and the NAIA's top ranked school, Oklahoma City, fourth with 798. Colorado, ranked No. 66, placed eighth with an 825 total.

The 10-team tournament included five top 50 teams along with NAIA No. 1 OCU, six of the seven schools that topped Colorado, with the format unique on two accounts: the teams play together in fivesomes, and instead of taking the four best 18-hole scores of the five players competing as is the case for the rest of the collegiate season, the team score is tallied from the four best scores on every hole

Had the traditional scoring format been used, only SMU and OCU switched places in the final standings.

The old and the young paced CU this weekend, as senior Blake Moore and true freshman Luke Symons each finished with 1-over 211 totals, tying the pair for 22nd on the 6,442-yard, par-70 Dornick Hills Country Club course layout.  Symons had the best final round for the Buffaloes, as his 1-under 69 also was his first round in the 60s as a collegian.  Moore followed a second round 66 with a closing 71, his best back-to-back rounds of the season, besting a 70-69 start at the Hawai'i-Hilo Intercollegiate to open the spring.

Junior Michael Baird closed strong with an even par 70, with his 214 total tying him for 30th overall.  Another junior, Patrick Grady, finished with a 73 for 218, tying for 41st in the 70-player field, while sophomore Derek Tolan overcame an opening 79 to play his last 36 holes just 3-over, with a 71 Sunday giving him a 222.

“I think we played our best today as a team, the guys created more opportunities to shoot lower,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  “We didn't necessarily come through every time, but we made progress.  It was good to see Luke get back on track, and Derek never gave up after a frustrating first round and played closer to what he's capable of.”

“We feel refreshed,” he added.  “We really tried to use all three rounds as preparation for the NCAA's later this week, and I think we're ready, the guys think we're ready, and we're definitely excited.”

Symons played as an individual, as Edwards took six golfers on the trip as the fifth position for the NCAA's is still up for grabs.  It will be decided Monday at the Open qualifying, as senior Ryan Anderson is battling Symons for the last spot.  Anderson started off decent here with rounds of 73 and 72, but closed with 78 for a 223 total.

Tulsa's Nick Geyger scored an eagle on the first playoff to hole to defeat Oklahoma State's Ryan Posey to claim medalist honors.  Geyger shot a final round 64, with Posey recording a 65 to force the first playoff in tournament history.  The second round leader, SMU's Colt Knost, had a five stoke lead over Posey entering the day, but shot a 71 to finish one back.

Edwards will decide his final team Monday night, with Baird, Tolan, Grady and Moore occupying the top four slots at present, though he has not determined the order.  Baird leads the team in stroke average (73.4), with Moore (74.5), Grady (74.8) and Tolan (75.0) within a half stroke of each other; Baird owns the top spring mark at 73.1, followed by Moore (73.5) and Tolan (74.2).  Symons has played in eight tournaments and owns a 76.1 average, while Anderson owns a 77.5 mark for five meets.
