Green Waves Topple Buffs

NEW ORLEANS ? Colorado fell to Tulane 30-24, 30-27, 28-30, 20-30, 14-16 as the Buffs opened up the 2007 season at the All-State Sugar Bowl Volleyball Classic in New Orleans. Despite winning the first two games, CU was unable to take the match from their host.

Colorado won the first game 30-24. CU went up 28-19, but the Green Waves rattled off five straight points before CU was able to close out the game. The Buffs recorded 17 kills and four errors on 38 attacks to hit .342 in the game.

The Buffs took the second game 30-27. Once again, they recorded 17 kills. CU hit .400 by collecting three errors and 35 attacks.

CU fell in the third game by a narrow margin of 28-30 and then dropped the fourth game 20-30. In the final game, the Buffs were stopped short, losing 14-16.

Freshman middle blocker Schylur Edelman recorded her first collegiate start. She totaled five kills and five blocks. Junior Kelsey Loop started at outside hitter and sophomore Kaitlyn Burkett started at setter, each earning their first career starts.

Sophomore Mallori Gibson recorded 21 kills to lead the Buffs.Junior Alex Buth came away with 17 kills and 14 digs for her first double-double of the season. Schaefer recorded 14 kills, while putting up two block solos and five blocks assists. Loop added eight kills in her first start. Burkett directed the CU offense with 60 assists.

Callie Webster picked up a career-high 21 digs at libero and Ashley VenHorst tallied a career-best 18.

The Buffaloes have not lost a season opener since they lost to UCLA in 2002 in Honolulu.

The Buffs will play against Furman on Saturday at 12 p.m. MST to finish up the All-State Sugar Bowl Volleyball Classic.
