Volleyball Falls To Furman

NEW ORLEANS ? Furman handed the University of Colorado volleyball team their second straight loss, 14-30, 24-30, 30-25, 30-28, 15-12, to start the season at the All-State Sugar Bowl Volleyball Classic in New Orleans. For the second time in as many contests, CU got off to a quick start by winning the first two games, but Furman came back after the intermission to win the final three frames.
This is the first time CU has dropped its first two matches of the season since 2002 when it lost three straight at the Hawai'ian Airlines Wahine Classic in
The Buffs dominated the first frame from the beginning and sealed it early with a 30-14 win. CU recorded 21 kills and three errors on 37 swings to attack at a .486 percentage. The second game was closer with four lead changes and eight ties.
The Lady Paladins took the next three 30-25, 30-28 and 16-14. All three games saw several lead changes as well as ties. The third game had eight ties and four lead changes. The most came in the fourth game (11 ties and five lead changes). The fifth game was just as turbulent with seven ties and five lead changes.
Kelsey Loop led the Buffs with a career-high 18 kills and hit .325. A trio of Buffs recorded 14 kills each, Alex Buth, Lauren Schaefer and Mallori Gibson. Schaefer hit a team-best .414 and added three aces. Buth earned her second straight double-double with 12 digs. Gibson added three aces as CU served up 13 in the match.
Kaitlyn Burkett dished out 41 assists in four games and Lauren Fanelli handed out 14 to led the Buffs to a .231 attack percentage. Callie Webster picked up a team-high 19 digs.
