No. 1 Stanford Edges Buffs 1-0
September 21, 2007 | Soccer
BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker here Friday afternoon, as the Buffaloes lost 1-0 to No. 1 Stanford in front of a record crowd of 3,110 at Prentup Field.
With the loss, Colorado is now winless in its last five games and falls to 2-2-3 on the season, while the Cardinal improves to 7-0-0.
"I'm disappointed in the loss," head coach Bill Hempen said. "They are a very organized and possession oriented team that just took advantage of a set piece. I'd like to think that we gave them everything they could handle."
At the 41:24 mark, the Cardinal was awarded a corner kick. Lizzy George stepped up to take the kick and the ball was left bouncing around in front of the Colorado goal. Stanford's Marisa Abegg was behind the Radlinski deflection and she sent a ball hard at the goal, hitting the crossbar and bouncing back in play. Rachel Buehler had one last shot to capitalize and headed a ball toward the goal, but Radlinski came away with the save.
Colorado and Stanford played to a scoreless first half, with the Cardinal out-shooting the Buffaloes 10 to four. The Buffs put three of their four shots on goal while Stanford only managed four of their 10.
The Buffaloes nearly scored on an Allison Kidd corner kick, seven minutes into the second half. After Stanford cleared the initial shot, freshman Kym Lowry lobbed another attempt toward the goal but Stanford's goalkeeper Kira Maker leaped into the air and pulled the ball in for her fourth save of the game.
"I have no complaints with the effort," Hempen said. "This very was a tactical game. It wasn't based on the ability of the athletes like a lot of college games are. They had a plan, we had a plan, and you could see it."
Stanford got on the board first in the 56th minute when Christen Press sent a corner kick into the box. Stanford's Allison Falk got her body on the ball but Radlinski deflected it away. Abegg was there for the rebound right in front of the goal and tapped the ball in, giving Stanford the 1-0 lead.
"They could be number one today then lose and be number 18 tomorrow, so the ranking doesn't really matter. It's very gratifying that we came out here and played well against them but still, a loss is a loss."
Colorado had one last chance to get on the board with 20 seconds remaining on the clock when Allison Kidd sent a long cross into the middle of the Stanford box. Lowry fought for the ball, but the Cardinal managed to clear it out of play. CU rushed to get the ball and execute one last corner kick, but time expired before they had the chance.
"It's frustrating that we had just that one let down," Michelle Wenino said. "All over we had a really good effort; we just couldn't get it in to the back of the net. We were working together and today was a lot better than it has been, so that's an accomplishment in itself."
A school record 3,110 fans came out to support the Buffaloes Friday afternoon, breaking the previous record at Prentup field by 1,239 people. The all-time record, before today, was set in 1998 when the Buffs played No. 1 North Carolina in front of an even 3,000 fans at Pleasant View Soccer Complex.
The Buffs finished the game, trailing the Cardinal in shots 18 to five. Radlinski racked up seven saves for Colorado on the defensive side, while the offense was unable to find the back of the net for the fourth consecutive game.
In the first game of the tournament, Denver took on Drake at 2 p.m. Denver scored first in the 17th minute off a corner kick play. Lauren Cavarra took the kick and Jenna Billingsley was on the receiving end. Billingsley trapped the ball and one-touched it into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Drake would not let up and tied game when Sinead Brown passed a ball to Nikki Thaden who took the ball across the box and shot the ball past the extended hands of DU goalkeeper Mackenzie Snyder. Both teams couldn't find the back of the net again and the game was sent into overtime. After two ten minute overtime periods, Denver and Drake ended up playing to a 1-1 tie.
The tournament will continue at Prentup field on Sunday, Sept. 23 starting at 11 a.m. when Denver takes on No. 1 Stanford. Colorado will follow and face Drake at 1 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
