Soccer Blanks Wyoming 2-0

September 25, 2007 | Soccer

LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team recorded their second straight shutout and fifth on the year, defeating the Wyoming Cowgirls 2-0 here Tuesday.

The Buffs got off to a slow start as they didn't take a shot until 14 minutes into the game when junior Amber Bettenhausen fired a ball towards Wyoming goalkeeper Jamie Scarcliff, but her shot was saved.

Colorado continued to pressure the Cowgirl defense and sophomore Nikki Marshall took a ball into the box and was pulled down by a Wyoming defender. CU was awarded a penalty kick and junior Alex Cousins stepped up and buried her shot into the lower left corner of the goal to give the Buffs a 1-0 lead.

"It was definitely Nikki's hard work that gave me the penalty kick," said Cousins. "When I stepped up to take the shot I just tried to put it past the keeper."

The Buffaloes took the lead into the half, but the Cowgirls out-shot CU six to five, with Colorado goalkeeper Kara Linder racking up four saves on the half.

Colorado opened the second half ready to attack as they took five shots to Wyoming's two in the first 13 minutes of second half play. In the 63rd minute, senior Allison Kidd stepped up to take a corner kick and played a perfect ball into the box, finding the foot of junior Gianna DeSaverio who tucked it away for the 2-0 lead.

"(Allison) Kidd played they ball perfectly, and it found me just a little bit inside the six-yard box," said DeSaverio. "It basically just came right to my foot and I just tapped it in."

The Buffs finished the game outshooting the Cowgirls 13 to nine. Junior goalkeeper Kirstin Radlinski picked up two second half saves for Colorado.

"The coaches have been changing some things around a lot at practice," said Cousins. "We're trying new formations and I think with a few more good practices we'll be in good position for the Big 12 conference. We've tried out so many things and we now we know what's good and what's not. Hopefully we'll find the magic lineup and we'll have that ready for Friday."

Colorado will return to Boulder and get ready to kick of Big 12 play against Texas Tech at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28 at Prentup Field.

"I think we're ready for Friday," said DeSaverio. "We're finally just starting to know each other enough to predict where our teammates are going to play the ball and where we need to be to support them. I think that we'll be ready for everything to start up on Friday."
