Tennis Opens Spring Season With Pair Of Losses

January 20, 2008 | Tennis

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? The University of Colorado women's tennis team began the Spring 2008 season falling in both of their matches over the weekend, the first to No. 67 New Mexico, 4-3, then a 7-0 defeat to No. 16 Vanderbilt.

On Saturday, the Buffaloes (0-2), ranked No. 38 nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, swept all three doubles positions, however lost four of their next six singles slots to the host Lobos. New Mexico (1-1) continued their success against CU winning their sixth straight match since 1998.

In doubles, Melisa Esposito and Camila Belassi playing as a tandem for the first time defeated Abou-Zekry/Scott, 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Franziska Jendrian and Monica Milewski followed, defeating their No. 3 doubles match over Rybe/White, 8-2. Jendrian/Milewski improved to 24-9 in dual match play with one another.

CU swept the third match as Abbie Probert and Gleisy Torres Torres edged Hayman/Zmak, 9-7 at No. 2 for the sweep.

With a 1-0 advantage and starting singles play, the Buffaloes only saw Milewski at No. 1 and Belassi at No. claim victories for points.

Milewski playing the top spot where she was very successful a year ago defeated Ola Abou-Zekry in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. Belassi, who played all of last season at No. 2, won her first collegiate match at No. 3, upsetting No. 85 Sandra Zmak 7-5, 6-4

Milewski won her 46th career singles match, while Belassi collected her 23rd.

On Sunday, CU could muster only a single doubles win to the Commodores. Although Vandy (3-0) earned the doubles point taking two of three matches, CU saw Jendrian and Milewski defeat Ferrell/K. Ulery, 8-3 for their 25th triumph in 34 matches. It was the Buffaloes first head-to-head match up with Vanderbilt.

CU returns to Boulder for a three-game homestand at the Millennium Harvest House next week hosting DePaul (Jan. 25). Other home matches include Northern Colorado (Feb. 6) and Denver (Feb. 9). Admission and parking are free.
