Buffs Fall to No. 18 Wildcats

Buffs Rally to Defeat Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas- The University of Colorado volleyball team defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders in five sets (20-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23, 19-17) on Saturday.

 With this win, CU improved to 11-9 overall and 5-6 in the Big 12. Texas Tech's record stands at 5-18 overall and 0-12 in the Big 12. Colorado leads the all-time series 21-4.

With her 21 kills in the match, Amber Sutherland moved up to 10th place on CU's all-time career kills list, putting her career total at 1,063. Alex Buth recorded 16 kills. Both Sutherland and Buth tallied nine digs for CU. Alex Penewell led the Buffs with a team-high two solo blocks and six block assists. 

Kaitlyn Burkett was also productive for Colorado, with a team-high 46 assists and 14 digs. Ashley VenHorst added eight digs and Callie Webster recorded a game-high 24 digs. The Buffs led the Red Raiders 76-72 in digs.

Texas Tech controlled the first two sets, but Colorado rallied in the third frame after taking the lead at 19-18 and came out victorious. From there, the Buffs stole the momentum and won sets four and five.

This was the fourth five-set game CU has won this season and the first five-set win on the road.

Texas Tech out-blocked Colorado with 13 total team blocks to CU's 11.5. The two teams were close in total kills. The Buffs racked up 64 kills and Texas Tech totaled 62.

In the fourth set, the Buffs hit .297 (17k-6e-37att) while the Red Raiders hit .182 (14k-6e-44att). In the game-determining fifth set, Colorado hit .407 (13k-2e-27att) compared to Texas Tech's .280 (11k-4e-25att).

Colorado will be back in action on Wednesday, October 29 to host Nebraska at 6:30 p.m. at the Coors Events Center.
