Buffs Capture Rocky Mountain Shootout Titles
October 04, 2008 | Cross Country
The men have won the last 18 shootout titles and 19 of the 23. The women have won the previous 10 titles, 16 of the last 17. They have won 17 titles overall.
Adams State's Aaron Brown took the men's title, finishing in 25 minutes, 4 seconds and UC-Colorado Springs' Shannon Payne took the women's title (21:25).
Junior transfer Jordan Kyle led the third-ranked men's team by placing second overall and junior Emily Hanenburg led the women by placing fifth. This was the first time since 1991 that a CU individual, on either side, did not with an individual title.

“I've been here since late June training, so I'm pretty happy with the race,” Kyle said. “I thought it went pretty well. Being this was my first race at altitude, I didn't really know what to expect and about three-quarters into the race it got a little tough.”
Since Kyle's arrival, he has been a nice addition to a deep men's team .
“He is a hard working guy and fit in immediately,” head coach Mark Wetmore said. ?He is going to help us a lot.”
Senior Chris Pannone was right on his heels as he placed third (25:22) to earn his highest finish at the meet.
“I'm really excited since this is my senior year,” Pannone said. “Every race has more meaning and this was my last shootout. I was happy to come out and give it my all today.”
Redshirt freshman Christian Thompson was the third Buff to finish, placing sixth overall and crossing the finish in 25:43. Sophomore Matt Tebo took eighth (25:48) and sophomore Nick Miller was the fifth scorer for the Buffs at 11th. He ran a mark of 26:19. Redshirt freshman Andy Wacker just missed scoring for CU by placing 12th (26:21).
The Buffs ran in a pack to start the race and stayed pretty close the entire time. Only six ran in the collegiate race and no one finished lower than 12th overall.
“We got out in the first 100 meters at a pretty solid pace and we eased into the rest of the race,” Kyle said. “A lot of the guys told me not to go up the first hill to fast because it can really take a lot out of you and then after that we tried to work into a solid pace and I like I was a little too aggressive in a couple parts. The last hill was tough to get up.”

“The first mile was pretty comfortable,” Pannone said. “I felt pretty good. After the first mile I got a little excited when I saw the fans on the side of the road. I wish I would have relaxed a little more, but as far as effort, I was really happy with the effort I put forward today.”
“It was a good race,” Kyle said. “I think I ran a little too hard in the middle and that was my fault. It would have been more intelligent to sit in a pack or run behind someone instead of trying to lead the whole way.”
The women finished in similar fashion to the men; no
“We all went out there and worked really hard together,” Hanenburg said. “We have been training hard and working hard. I couldn't have had as good as a race if I didn't have Laura, Allison, Emma and Morgan pushing me. I just did the best I could and that is all I can do.”
Wetmore was pleasantly surprised by Hanenburg's performance.
“I was a little bit surprised because she was 100-150 meters behind the leaders with a mile to go,” he said. “She has done great work and had her best summer ever. It doesn't surprise me overall that she is running well. She definitely surprised me in the last five-six minutes in the race.”
Sophomore Allison Sawyer was sixth (22:07), senior Morgan Ekemo was seventh (22:10) and freshman Emma Coburn took eighth (22:13).
Coburn, who was running in just her third race as a Buff, was very happy with her performance on the challenging course.
“I was really excited because our goal is to run a minute faster than at the time trial and I did that today,” Coburn explained. “I would have been happy if I hard a stronger finish since I kind of died the last 100 yards, but it was a good race.”
Payne won the race in 21:25 and was out of sight for most of the Buffs almost from the start.
“Our plan was just to try to be up there with the leaders and to try to hang,” Coburn said. “We wanted to run a little conservatively for the first mile or two. We didn't want to burn out, so if that meant letting go of the leaders, then that was okay. We definitely didn't want to go too fast in the first two miles.”
“I was very happy with how they (women) all ran,” Wetmore said. “They were all about 20-30 seconds faster than I planned. We are unranked right now and we have a long road ahead of us to get back to where we would like to be and they took a step in that direction today.”
Overall it was a good day for the Buffs. The next big test will be pre-nationals on Oct. 18 in
“I thought we had a good day,” Wetmore said. “I was very happy across the board. We might be a little bit ahead of where I hoped we would be.”
