Colorado Wins Big at Senior Night

Colorado Wins Big at Senior Night

November 26, 2008 | Volleyball

BOULDER – The University of Colorado volleyball team swept Oklahoma (26-24, 25-22, 25-23) on Wednesday night in the home finale of the 2008 season at the Coors Events Center.

The Buffs celebrated senior night as Alex Buth, Lauren Schaefer, Amber Sutherland, Ashley VenHorst and Callie Webster played in their final home match of their careers. The five seniors were honored before and after the match.

“It's great to see the five seniors go out with a win,” Aiu said. “It's been a while since we have won a match. It was nice to see the team battle through a win tonight. This was a great group of kids. They were not afraid to work hard and get in the gym every day.”

With the win, the Buffs snapped a six-match losing streak. CU improved to 13-15 overall and 7-12 in the Big 12 while OU dropped to 12-16 overall and 8-12 in the league.

“Coming in and beating them in three games, especially when we've had those losses, it's easy to flop down and give in,” Sutherland said. “It was the last time that us seniors are going to play together at Coors and we had to lay everything out on the line and just have fun and relax. Each of us tried to play a leadership role in our own way and I love everyone on this team.”

Sutherland had a senior night to remember as she recorded 13 kills and 12 digs for her second double-double of the season. She hit .216 with five errors on 37 attacks.

Sisco led the Buffs with 14 kills and Schylur Edelman added 10. Edelman also led the Buffs with a .429 hitting percentage. As a team, the Buffs hit .205. Kaitlyn Burkett dished out 43 assists in the win.

Webster, as she has done most of the season, led CU with 19 digs. The team picked up 57 digs compared to 48 by the Sooners.

The Buffs had to take it to extra points to win the first set. Schaefer, Sutherland and Sisco each recorded five kills in the set as the Buffs hit .277. Sutherland hit a set high .417 with no errors on 12 attacks.

The second set was also close and had 11 ties and just two lead changes. Sutherland tacked on another five kills while Webster picked up eight digs. This time the Buffs hit just .119 but held the Sooners to a .023 percentage.

The Sooners kept the third set close, but CU was able to pull away to take the set. This time it was Sisco who led the Buffs with seven kills in the set.

The Buffs will wrap up the 2008 season against No. 3 Texas on Saturday, Nov. 29 in Austin.
