Women's Golfers Tie For 10th At Florida State Invitational
February 24, 2008 | Women's Golf
GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? The University of Colorado women's golf team improved three spots and finished in a tie for 10th place in its first tournament of the spring season here Sunday, shooting the team's tournament-best score of 299 in the final round at the University of Florida Lady Gator Invitational.
“Overall, today was better,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “However, we are still not close to where we should be right now. We made some mistakes this weekend and threw away some easy shots, but things did get better and it was certainly nice to have these past three days of practice.”
“I'd be more concerned right now if we didn't improve each day,” said assistant coach Brent Franklin. “It was a stern short game challenge this weekend for a team that has not been able to really practice their short game for three months. The course was difficult and it required great touch. That's an area that we haven't been able to practice because we don't have the facilities to be able to do that at this time of the year, and that really showed.”
Freshman Stephanie Simich led the Buffaloes, finishing in a tie for 29th place at 16 strokes over par (226). Her first round score of 73 proved to be a team-low on the weekend. This marks Simich's second-best career finish by one place, as she took 28th at the Texas Tech Invitational during the fall season.
“I'm happy with the way that I played this weekend,” said Simich. I really focused on my practice swings and tried to make smart decisions around the greens. As a team, I think we need to keep working on some areas of our game and start shooting lower scores”
Simich was followed by sophomore Julie Kim and senior Lindsay Senger, who tied for 38th place at 20 over par (230). Kim finished strong with three pars and a birdie on her final four holes, shooting a 74 in round three, which proved to be a solid five-stroke improvement from her first round score of 79. Senger carded a team high three birdies in the final round, all of which coming in three of the first four holes on the front nine.
Sophomore Dominique Pytlewski carded a third round score of 74 and demonstrated an impressive eight-stroke improvement from her second round, finishing at 27 strokes over par (237), moving her up 13 places in the individual standings to land in a tie for 60th.

“I think that we all expected to play a little better than we did this weekend,” said Senger. “Coming down here to play such a good course, we realized that we weren't completely prepared. We're taking a lot from it though and we know what we need to work on. I don't think that we're too worried going into the next couple of weeks and we all know what we need to do between now and the next tournament. This weekend gave us a lot of confidence with our short game because if we were able to do decent on such a challenging course, hopefully the rest of the season will seem fairly easy.”
