Women's Golf Tied For Sixth at Oregon Duck Invite

March 24, 2008 | Women's Golf

EUGENE, Ore. ? The University of Colorado women's golf team stood in a sixth -place tie after the first two rounds of the University of Oregon Duck Invitational at the Eugene Country Club here Monday.

“This is a very challenging golf course,” said head coach Anne Kelly.  “The 2008 U.S. Women's amateur was hosted here this summer so it's definitely a difficult course to play.”

Host school and No. 45-ranked Oregon had a comfortable lead over the rest of the field in the morning, but the Ducks only hold a one-stroke lead over UC Davis (302-305-607) after two rounds.  Washington State (304-308-612), Washington (309-306-615) and No. 16 California (314-301-615) round out the top-five schools.

Colorado (308-311), listed at No. 56 in the Golfstat rankings, is tied with Idaho with totals of 619, just four strokes behind the top-ranked team in the field, California.

Sophomore Dominique Pytlewski paced the Buffaloes Monday, turning in a 75-74-149 scorecard (five-over) on the 6,052-yard, par-72 course, tying her for fifth place overall, just six shots out of the lead.  Pytlewski recorded an early triple-bogey in the morning, but went on to par the final 13 out of 14 holes for a three-over 75 in the opening round.  She managed to climb two spots in the individual standings in the afternoon, carding back-to-back birdies on the back nine, improving her score by one stroke and finishing with a two-over, second round score of 74.

“From what it looks like, with the exception of just a few people in the field, no one is really playing that great,” said Pytlewski.  “We knew that it was going to be that way, like (assistant coach) Brent (Franklin) said today that three or four over might be a good score.  After today I think we all realize that we can play this course well and take advantage of using wedges around the green.  Everyone is hitting decent, so we just have to make sure that we bring a better short game tomorrow.”

Fellow sophomore Christine Kim appears to be returning to the level of play that she demonstrated a year ago before she suffered a wrist break last spring as she is tied for eighth through 36 holes with a 74-76-150 effort.  Kim was the team leader in the morning with a pair of birdies in her opening round for a two-over 74, but she fell back three spots in the individual standings after carding a four-over 76 in the afternoon.

“Christine (Kim) and Domi (Pytlewski) played some great golf today,” said Kelly.  “Christine hasn't played competitively for 11 months with her injury, and now she is finally coming back and stepping up when we need her.  We're short-handed this tournament because Julie (Kim) is out with a back injury, so we need people to continue to step up and Christine is sure doing that.”

“I think Christine did awesome today,” said Pytlewski.  “We know that she has the game and has it in her, it was just a matter of her getting that confidence back because it's tough not playing for so long and coming back from an injury.  It's great to see her have that confidence again and you can see it in her face that she's not tentative at all and it showed today.”

Stephanie Simich (79-81-160), Lindsay Senger (80-81-161), and Cierra Ko (83-80-163) rounded out the CU action here on the first day.

Oregon's Kendra Little carded a 70-73-143 (one-under), good for a one shot lead over second place as her first-round 70 was the best score logged on Monday.

“Overall, I'm quite honestly a little disappointed,” said Kelly.  “Other than our top two scorers, we need to be playing a whole lot better.  We're still throwing away some shots and when we have the opportunity to beat a number of teams ranked higher than us, we need to be able to take advantage of that.  We definitely need to step it up and get five people playing well tomorrow.”

The final round of the tournament is scheduled to tee off Tuesday morning at approximately 8:30 a.m.  Live stats will be available at the www.GolfStat.com website.
