Golfers Finish Seventh in Oregon
March 25, 2008 | Women's Golf
EUGENE ? The University of Colorado women's golf team struggled down the stretch in the final round here Tuesday, and as a result slipped from sixth to a seventh place finish in the University of Oregon Duck Invitational.
Host school and No. 45-ranked Oregon rode a six-over par, tournament-low 294 team total in the final round to a four-stroke win, as the Ducks finished with a 900 score (36-over par). UC Davis followed closely in second (904), with No. 16 California (912),
“I think that we played better overall today,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “(Lindsay) Senger and Stephanie (Simich) both played much better this round. We are still struggling with our putters and that's something that we really just have to continue to work on. Our team continues to work hard and we did hit some good shots today, but it was a championship golf course and that can definitely show a team's weak points.”
Sophomore Dominique Pytlewski continued to pace the way for the Buffaloes, as she finished eighth overall with a four-over 76 on Tuesday for a 225 total on the 6,052-yard, par-72 Eugene Country Club course, the site of the 2008 U.S. Women's amateur tournament. While Pytlewski struggled early on in the third round and was four-over on the front nine, she managed to turn things around, with help from a pair of birdies, playing the back nine to an even-par.
Fellow sophomore Christine Kim was right behind Pytlewski, taking 21st as she closed with a final round score of 81, for a 231 total. Freshman Stephanie Simich, who landed in a tie for 35th place, finished the tournament by carding a four-over 76, improving five strokes from the second round. Simich was even through eight consecutive holes on the front nine, but a few unfortunate bogeys on the back nine kept her from making a significant jump in the individual standings.
Senior Lindsay Senger also battled back on the final day of competition, reducing her second round score by five strokes, carding a team-high four birdies on the day, landing her in a tie for 39th (80-81-76-237). Junior Cierra Ko rounded out the scoring for the Buffaloes, recording her second consecutive 80 in the final round of play, finishing in a tie for 51st in the individual standings.
“I think that we are finally getting confidence in ourselves and each one of us is starting to realize that so much of this game is mental and we really have to start believing in ourselves,” said Pytlewski. “Everyone has their areas to work on, but in general we really need to pick up our short game. This course showed us that it's not always about how you hit the ball. Not making putts is the most painful thing and we realize that you can't do well if you're not performing around the greens.”
The Buffaloes will try to get things going again this weekend, when they travel to
“As a team, we've been dealing with a lot of outside factors that really just haven't been helpful,” said Kelly. “We're constantly battling injuries and illness and it's tough to stay on top of your game when the line-up is depleted.”
