Golfers 11th at MountainView Collegiate

TUCSON ? The University of Colorado women's golf team struggled to gain control here Saturday, and as a result, stand in 11th place after the first two rounds of the 10th annual MountainView Collegiate.

“Overall we had some solid play,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “We struggled with a couple of our holes that really hurt both our afternoon and morning scores and we realize that we need to stay away from those big numbers.”

The University of Oklahoma posted an impressive first-round total of 287 and closed the day with a 589 team score, along with Indiana University, as the Sooners and Hoosiers are both tied for first place.

“We had solid play this morning from Domi and especially Cierra,” said Kelly. “It was nice to see her play so well and really help the team. Stephanie also showed a lot as she made a nice comeback after a very rough start. This afternoon I was extremely proud of Christine. After her 11 month layoff, she's finally starting to get her game back.”

Sophomore Christine Kim, who opened with a 76, improved four strokes and carded an even-par 72 in the second round to lead the Buffaloes. Her 604 total has her tied for 18th individually.

“I struggled with my putting in the beginning and I wasn't hitting as well, but once I relaxed I was able to do a little better. Even though I've been out for awhile, I think that I'm actually more competitive now than I was before. I really want to do well.”

Freshman Stephanie Simich (77-74-151) got off to a rough start in the first round, as she was seven-over through the first four holes, but made an impressive comeback and played the remaining 32 holes at even-par. Simich currently sits in a tie for 31st in the individual standings.

Just one-stroke behind Simich, sophomore Dominique Pytlewski carded a two-round total of 152. She started her first 18 holes with 16 pars and two bogeys and struggled on the second 18 with a triple-bogey on the back nine to land in a tie for 43rd.

Senior Lindsay Senger (75-80-155) and junior Cierra Ko (75-84-159) round out the Buffalo line-up as they both shot identical 75's in the opening round of the tournament. Ko's first-round 75 ties her season-low.

“We're hoping tomorrow that we get all five players playing well at the same time,” said Kelly. “That's where we're struggling currently because we only have one or two playing well and we really need at least three and hopefully four playing well at the same time.”

San Jose State's Erica Moston, who tallied a tournament-low 68 in round one, leads the field with a four-under total of 140.

The final round of the tournament is scheduled to get underway with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. Sunday.
