Golfers Finish Eighth at Sacramento State

April 01, 2008 | Women's Golf

SACRAMENTO ? Despite some final round struggles, the University of Colorado women's golf team moved up one spot in the standings to finish in a tie for eighth place as the NCAA Western Regional Preview was completed here Tuesday.

No. 12 Denver cruised to a first place finish with a three-day total of 876, a comfortable 26 strokes over runner-up No. 41 Oregon (900).  Fresno State (904), UC Davis (905), and No. 46 UNLV (905) all followed closely behind Oregon to round out the top five schools.  Colorado (307-296-310-913) finished eighth in the 19-team field.

“The course was definitely playing a little more difficult today,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “They had some pretty tough hole locations.  To the green, we hit the ball very well, but again, we're just not quite there yet.  Overall I think the experience of playing three very difficult and very different golf courses this week has been good for us, but what it comes down to is that we're still a pretty young, injured team.”

Freshman Stephanie Simich was CU's top individual finisher for the third time this spring, taking 14th place with a 77-69-77-223 on the 6,853-yard, par-72 Lincoln Hills Golf Club course layout.

“I think that the past three tournaments has worn down on everyone, but the experience has definitely taught us a lot about working on our game, staying positive and it has challenged us to keep pushing,” said Simich.  “As much golf as it is, everyone has made strides this week in different ways and I think we're moving in the right direction with the end of the season coming up.”

Senior Lindsay Senger and sophomore Dominique Pytlewski followed Simich in 29th and 37th place, respectively.  Senger carded a pair of early double-bogeys to set her back in the third round, but finished the day with a birdie on her final hole, as she tallied a 79-72-78-229 for the tournament.  Pytlewski could never quite duplicate her first round, one-over par score, and was unable to record a single birdie in the final round, finishing the tournament with a 73-80-78-231 effort.

Sophomore Christine Kim and junior Cierra Ko (83-78-81-242) rounded out the scoring for CU.  Kim recorded her second-straight 77, for a 231 total, which tied her at 41st place in the individual standings.  Ko finished in a tie for 79th place.

“We're two or three shots away per person from playing the way that we know we can,” said Kelly.  “Overall I think everyone is just a little frustrated, but at the same time they are motivated to come home and regroup and get going again for Stanford.  Next week we'll play another challenging golf course and hopefully it will all pay off for Big 12's.”

The Buffaloes return to action next week, April 11-12, when the travel to Palo Alto, Calif. for the Peg Barnard Stanford Collegiate, which is their last regular season tournament before the Big 12 Championships, April 25-27, in Stillwater, Okla.
