April 17, 2008 | General, Men's Golf, Tennis, Track and Field, Women's Golf

BOULDER-- Men's golfer Luke Symons (sophomore) and track distance runner Jenny Barringer, were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of April 7-13.

This is Symons' first athlete of the week honor for the year and his career. Barringer now has four honors on the year and 12 for her career. The 12 career honors move her into a tie for second place all-time with Richard Roby; both are two behind all-time leader Adam Goucher (14).

Symons, a Highlands Ranch, Colo. (ThunderRidge) native, had two top 10 finishes last week as he led CU in both tournaments. He led CU to a third place finish in CU's Stevinson Ranch Invitational and then to a win in the Ohio State Kepler Intercollegiate. Symons owns a 74.33 stroke average for the year (second best on the team), including a team-best 73.27 for the spring.

In the CU-Stevinson Ranch Invitational, Symons finished tied for 10th with a four above par 220 (80-70-70). Symons followed that up with a second place finish at the Ohio State Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, as he recorded a 222 (72-78-72). It was the best finish by a Buff golfer since Edward McGlasson claimed medalist honors in the Tunica National Intercollegiate the first week of November 2005.

Barringer, an Oviedo, Fla. (Oviedo) native, Barringer won the 800-meter run at the CU Invitational on Saturday. She crossed the finish in 2:09.37, which was a regional qualifying mark. She finished a full six seconds ahead of teammate Sara Vaughn (2:15.89). Her mark was the second fastest in the conference, just under a second behind Sally Kipyego. Barringer's time ranks 22nd overall in the country.

Others nominated for this week's award were Kenyon Neuman (track and field), Christine Kim (women's golf) and Veera Nurmi (tennis).

Track and Field: Kenyon Neuman, Senior, Bend, Ore.

Neuman won the 1,500-meter run at the CU Invitational last Saturday. He recorded a regional qualifying mark and a personal best of 3:49.93. He was one and a half seconds ahead of teammate Brent Vaughn. His mark ranks second on the Big 12 list behind teammate Stephen Pifer and is 16th on the national list.

Women's Golf: Christine Kim, Sophomore, Pahoa, Hawai'i

Kim took seventh place at the Peg Barnard Stanford Invitational last week. She led CU on the first day with a two-over 73 and after her five-over 76 on day two, she paced the Buffs with a 149 total on the 6,117-yard, par-71 Stanford University golf course. It was Kim's first top-10 finish of the season.

Tennis: Veera Nurmi, Senior, Lahti, Finland

Nurmi won a pair of singles matches leading Colorado to a pair of victories over the weekend, defeating Iowa State, 7-0, and the clinching match over No. 67 Nebraska. Nurmi won her No. 4 singles match in straight sets against Iowa State, then two days later, rallied from being a set down to defeat Nebraska's Stephanie Evans 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-1. Nurmi's pair of triumphs was her 70th and 71st career singles matches moving into a 13th place tie on Colorado's all-time wins list. She improves her Big 12 Conference record to 7-2. Nurmi has won three straight matches, including four of her last five.
