Women's Golf Moves into 11th at Big 12's

April 26, 2008 | Women's Golf

STILLWATER, Okla. ? The University of Colorado women's golf team saw significant improvement by all but one player here Saturday at the 2008 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship, but were only able to move up one spot in the standings as they are in 11th place after two rounds of play.

Host Oklahoma State holds on to the lead after two rounds, shooting 303-302?605 (+14) to lead Texas A&M by 14 strokes (315-304?619) and third place Missouri (317-319?636) by 31 shots.  CU shot 322 today, a 29-stroke improvement from the Friday score of 351, giving the Buffs a 673 total.

Oklahoma State's Jaclyn Sweeney (74-74 ?148) continues to lead the medalist race.  She holds the lead over Texas A&M's Sarah Zwartynski (150) who shot a tournament-low score of 73 in round two, and teammate Karin Kinnerud (152).

“Yesterday was pretty brutal weather-wise, but today I think that everyone was very determined to do better after being so discouraged and disappointed after yesterday's round,” said head coach Anne Kelly.  “They tried hard today and did a little better, but we still have the ability to play even better than we did today.  It's a young, inexperienced team, especially here at the Big 12's as Domi (Pytlewski) and Lindsay (Senger) are the only ones that have played in the post-season, so experience is definitely something that we're lacking.”

Colorado sophomore's Dominique Pytlewski and Christine Kim lead the Buffaloes in a tie for 40th place with identical two-day totals of 167.  Pytlewski improved by nine strokes in round two and led the Buffs with a team, tournament-low score of 79, including two birdies, one of which came on a hole that she had previously quadruple-bogeyed on day one.

“I think the weather had a lot to do with our play yesterday,” said Kim.  “A lot of shots that I hit yesterday were good, but the wind took it because I hit so high and that affects the ball a lot.  Tomorrow I have to focus on hitting lower shots and playing the wind and I think that all of us just need to pay attention a lot to those factors.”

Senior Lindsay Senger follows the pair with a 169 total, good for 45th place individually.  Senger recorded a team-high 10 pars, but a couple of triple-bogeys kept her from scoring under 80, as she carded a round-two score of 82.

“I didn't hit the ball as well today, but I was able to place it in better spots than yesterday, which helped me,” said Senger.  I was able to two-putt a lot for par and if I could have eliminated the two triple-bogeys that I shot, I would have had a pretty solid and respectable round.”

Freshman Stephanie Simich (170) and junior Cierra Ko (183) round out the scoring for the Buffaloes.  Simich kicked off the day with a double-bogey on her first hole, and rebounded with a birdie on the second, but she was unable to score anything better than par the rest of the day and she finished with an 81, good for 48th place overall.  Ko shot a second-round 92 and sits in 58th place.

“The weather is supposed to be really bad tomorrow, but we're actually kind of happy about that,” said Kelly.  “Tomorrow will be a chance for us to make up strokes as long as we stay mentally strong to take on the conditions and focus on the shot at hand.”

The 2008 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship will wrap up on Sunday morning with the final round.  CU golf fans can follow the action and check the Buff tee times for Sunday's action at www.golfstat.com.

“When the wind blows, this golf course is extremely difficult,” said Senger.  “Everyone is mentally preparing themselves for tomorrow and we understand that we could make a lot of bogeys but that 75 and breaking 80 could be a good score out here.  If we can maintain our composure and not get frustrated or lose our concentration because of a bad score, we have the potential to shoot a similar round as today, if not better.”
